5. Kerry spoke about fixing the AMT and capital gains tax

Kerry wants the AMT fixed so it doesn't hit people it was never designed for. Grassley is willing to get rid of it altogether. He also said he agreed with Kerry's explanation of the history and the definition of the AMT - but not the capital gains/dividends (I assume the problem is - that with no AMT there will be people manipulating the system to pay nothing as happened before it was enacted. Given the deficit - Kerry wants to fix the AMT ) Grassley is more concerned with lowering the capital gains tax and tax on dividends.

The problem with what Grassley wants is that dividends will be taxed at a lower rate than income from wages. Kerry doesn't think this is fair.
