Ocean and Fisheries hearing tomorrow.
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 10:40 PM by TayTay
Okay, Sen. Kerry is on the Subcommittee on Fisheries and the Coast Guard and the National Ocean Policy Study. Tomorrow's hearing in the Senate Commerce committee is:

National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration Budget
Full Committee Hearing
Thursday, February 16 2006 - 2:30 PM - SD-562
http://commerce.senate.gov/hearings/witnesslist.cfm?id=1737

Webcast: Click here to view a live webcast of this hearing.
Description: Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Co-Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) have scheduled a Full Committee Hearing on the Administration's FY2007 budget request for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for Thursday, February 16, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. in room 562 of the Dirksen Building.

Panel 1:

Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., U.S. Navy (Ret.)
Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator,

I really should watch this one. (I have been lax in watching Fisheries hearings. My bad.) I like Fish and Oceans and stuff and this might be interesting. And Sen. Kerry might show. (might not.) NOAA forecasts the weather. Hmmm, that means they forecast Hurricane Katrina last year. Didn't the Bush Admin ignore that? Damn NOAA for forecasting an inconvenient storm. I bet their budget was cut.

2. I have yet to make it through one whole hearing.
But there might be someone, somewhere who watches these.

I tend to get the transcripts, see if anything happened and then, ahm, move on.

3. This is important stuff, really it is
It's actually really important to me, my entire livelihood is dependent on healthy oceans and fisheries. As it is, my flu keeps getting worse and I don't know how long I'm even going to be able to sit up, let alone watch the hearing.

4. Sandy, I was just kidding
On another thread I put down a link to a series in the BGlobe about Fishery concerns locally. I am actually quite interested in the issue. I knew people who made their living in Gloucester, MA as fishermen (and lobstermen.) Fishing stocks are a big, big problem in my area. (The Grand Banks and George's bank might just be fished out and so forth.)

My sympathies. I will be watching this hearing. I was just having some fun.

5. Oh I know
There was supposed to be more levity in my post. I guess it didn't quite make it's way through the headache and churning stomach. lol.

It really is important stuff, oceans and fisheries. I should pay a whole lot more attention to it than I do for my own benefit. Not to mention having handy dandy reasons the entirety of the Oregon Coast should be voting for Kerry and Democrats!!

6. Get better soon.
This has been a horrible winter for viruses, even if none of them has been the bird flu!

Here's some virtual chicken soup for you...

12. Thanks
It's one of those really annoying flus, the kind that doesn't knock you out flat so you keep thinking you'll feel better in a while, or maybe tomorrow, or tomorrow... blech.

10. Stevens is pissed cuz Alaska lost some funding
and he can't put it back in because 'earmarks' are not in favor at the moment and he is afraid any amendments to add funding for Alaska projects will get voted down on producedurals. (LOL!)

16. Well? How was it?
Was it fascinating? Did the Senator show up?
Sorry, Tay. I know you're angry at me for making fun of your fisheries thingie, but you have to understand that even though we have three rivers here in Pittsburgh, fishing is pretty much limited to dragging for the poor souls that tend to pop up after the thaw.
Sigh, I love the spring.

So, was it great or what?

dragging for the poor souls the mob threw in the brink. But I guess that would be a different state.

18. GV: I could never be mad at you.
I don't think it's possible. We still have to pick a time in the fall so I can come to PA and help get rid of Santorum.

Ahm, in all honesty, I ahm, make fun of the Fisheries hearings more than anyone else here. (I am evil and will go straight to heck when I die, no doubt.) I can't do a lot of the other hearings either. I tried to listen to the Finance one today and just couldn't do it. We are, after all, only human and boring hearings are why God invented transcripts so you can scan them for tidbits. (Now you know my nefarious secret. I cheat.)

19. Interesting Casey/Skanktorum story in the PG
It's almost sad how desperate Ricky is.

That exercise this week has turned up two contributions to Mr. Casey from lobbyists who worked closely with Mr. Abramoff while he was at the firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP. Officials of the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee and at Mr. Santorum's campaign are making an issue of $5,500 that the Democratic challenger received last year from two former employees of that law firm: Michael Smith and Edward Ayoob.

Even though the contributions by both men were made more than a year after Mr. Abramoff was pressured to resign by Greenberg Traurig and at a time when both were working for new firms, the Republican campaign committee and Mr. Santorum's campaign yesterday said Mr. Casey was applying a double standard for contributions to his campaign and those to the senator's.

20. Desperate is right.
This is an incredible reach, even for Rethugs. Soon they'll be reduced to saying 'the grocery bag boy at the supermarket once bagged groceries for Abramoff. He also bagged groceries for Candidate XXXX. Therefore, they are both guilty.') It's coming, just wait.

21. You would have loved a headline on the front page of my local paper Tay
"Flounder addendum draws criticism at Monday meeting"

Sounds right up your alley. LOL. Actually it is Massachusetts related. Seems that Mass, Connecticut and New York all exceeded their target flounder catch limit last year (for recreational fishing) and some NC folks are upset because the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission wants to change their recreational fishery management plan to accommodate those states who exceeded their limits. Or something like that. Really exciting stuff. (Not so much.)

Cutting NOAA's budget is just stupid. That will really hurt a lot of people who either make their living on the water or live near the water. I think their forecasts are much more trustworthy than the Weather Channel's. The WC is more into drama, less into getting the forecast correct. (IMO)
