Kerry campaigns for Cantwell in WA
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 08:17 AM by Mass
Yesterday, John Kerry was in Seattle fundraising for Maria Cantwell (while Stevens was there campaigning against her).

"Northwest Progressive Institute Official Blog" has a nice write-up on the event, who gathered 1000 people:

http://www.nwprogressive.org/weblog/2006/04/cantwell-kerry-speak-in-seattle-on.html

Cantwell, Kerry speak in Seattle on importance of winning in 2006
U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and John Kerry appeared side by side tonight at a cheerful reception in Seattle to speak to supporters and talk about the importance of taking back Congress and the country in 2006.

The senators were accompanied by Teresa Heinz Kerry and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels (who were repeatedly praised for their outstanding environmental work), among other special guests. Following a kickoff speech by Mayor Nickels, Senator Kerry delivered a glowing introduction for Senator Cantwell.

He reminded the audience of more than 1,000 about Maria's tireless work in the U.S. Senate fighting against drilling in the Arctic Refuge and fighting for the ratepayers of Snohomish PUD, who were victimized by the crooks at Enron.
...

Cantwell had also some nice words for Kerry while she defended her record:

"This is Kerry country," Cantwell said of the Pacific Northwest, recollecting that Kerry won Washington State in 2004 by some 54%. She also recalled her own narrow victory in 2000 over incumbent (and entrenched Republican) Slade Gorton.

She repeatedly spoke of what a Kerry presidency would have meant for Washington State, especially on key issues such as energy independence and healthcare.

...

Seattle Times has more about both Stevens's visit, who apparently left his Hulk tie home.

U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska on Tuesday made good on his threat to haunt Sen. Maria Cantwell in her home state for leading the opposition to Arctic oil drilling. Without mentioning her name, he bemoaned the decay of relations between Washington state and Alaska and said both states will suffer for it.

"I'm not commenting on any politics. It's not my bag," Stevens said after a morning appearance in Tacoma.

and Kerry's visit

Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts was in Seattle stumping for Cantwell on Tuesday and said the fact that Stevens was here is evidence of Cantwell's influence in the Senate.

"Maria Cantwell has been a terrific leader who is representing the real interests of the people of Washington state. The appearance of Ted Stevens underscores that," Kerry said.

However, he added, Stevens' visit also reflects "a continuation of the lack of congeniality in the U.S. Senate."

5. In addition to the
"what decade is this, anyway?" question, I'd add this: Gee, Senator Stevens, if politics isn't your "bag", then what exactly is??? Despoiling the Arctic wilderness??
