Lamar Alexander is an idiot
Edited on Mon May-01-06 01:27 PM by TayTay
He is on the Senate floor bloviating about how awful it is that the National Anthem has been translated into another language.

What a fat-head. Not only is he one of the most boring speakers in the Senate, he is also one of the most jingoistic.

My sympathies to the good people of Tennessee. You deserve better.

"It adds to multiculturism, which is destroying America. We take diversity, put it into a blender, and come out with english-speaking white people or people who want to be english-speaking white people. What is wrong with people who don't speak American, don't they want to be like us?" --- ahm, paraphrased, but not by much.

Honestly, this man is an abomination.

"We must sing the National Anthem in English, lest the nation fall into some sort of weird non-English speaking delirium. We must not sing in Spanish, because ahm, we never sang the Anthem in German." -- paraphrased, but not by much.

Who elects these morons?

Frist and other desperate Senators are introducing a Senate resolution that will only allow people to sing the Anthem in English. It's called the, "We're desperate about the Mid-Terms" Bill. OMG!

Cheesus criminey. What a bunch of morans.

1. How stupid
What seems weird is the Spanish anthem was not a translation or intended as a substitute, but it did allow Spanish speaking immigrants to speak of their loyalty.

11. Exactly it wasn't to mock or make it a substitute
but rather to show that they love this country.

2. I would LOVE to hear it in another language.
It might take on a different tone or beauty to it. Only ignoramuses would be so anti-any other language but English to feel threatened by "Eine schoene helle Sternfahne" or something (sorry my German is rather bad, but way better than my Spanish). It's all about low self esteem. A lot of Americans can only speak English and feel dumb when they try to speak another language (believe me, I've been there). They never take it to the next level, where they just keep making mistakes until they improve. Instead, they give up and then start putting down seeing any other language but English. But once again, it all comes down to a person's self confidence. Once an American has mastered a 2nd or 3rd language, they're less worried about such trivialities.

Good news is that with all that is going wrong in this country, the bag of GOP tricks are going to fail BIG TIME this time.

4. The thing is
that this got started because some guy in England recorded it in Spainish. Who cares, damn these idiots drive me nuts. My daughter is a music major and I know she would love to sing the anthem in more than one language.

9. That's ironic, because it was an English
(y'know, British) song originally, then became the national anthem when the new lyrics.

So this whole debate is really hypocritical.

5. Why is it that Democrats can actually speak foreign languages
while Rethugs can only pretend to. I think Bush's Spanish is no better than his English, which is awful. OTOH, I notice that several Dems, including Sen. Kerry speak fluent Spanish and have been tapped to record the Dem radio message in Spanish several times.

Sigh! If I ever had a Senator who proposed such a dumb resolution in a time of war, while the nation was going through such hardship, I would publicly divorce them. (Sorry, no, I can't have you as a Sen. anymore. Irreconcilable differences. Just leave now, while you still have no dignity and before I get really upset.)

6. He's an a**. Besides, he's standing by Bush, who
stands on things.

I wish I could put Condi on the floor with him. They could go at it: she could knock some sense into him, and he could slap the lies out of her mouth.

7. Senators like these
should be poster boys for public-financed campaigns. Because look what private/corporate money buys. I mean, there must be tons of smart people out there who would run for office if they had the bucks. So we get the dumber ones who are run by lobbyists.

I know I made lots of sweeping generalities to make my point, but still...

13. Not only that but on Franken's show today
they said that Bush used to show up for rallies in 2000 and sing the Anthem in Spanish with the crowd at Hispanic/Latino rallies.

Somewhere there is a tape of this. I bet it shows up.

15. I bet you he botched it
In all fairness I would botch if I had to sing it in English. It really doesn't matter what language it's in. If it's in Spanish the meaning really is the same now if it's in English and the words are changed to hate on the US then it's different. Hell I agree with the setiment honestly I'd love to ehar it in Spanish. I've heard Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone in Spanish and it was great.

Edited to add: this is actually a really BIG mistake that * never would have made a few years ago. I think they're really burned out at the WH, and Rove is distracted because of his legal problems. Just taking a step back, this is really quite incredible that such a major gaffe has been made on something so small. I thought only Dems make mistakes (in political theater, that is) like this. Obviously, the WH "shake up" has done nothing to stop mistakes like this. Wow. How much longer is he going to hang around anyway?

17. Some unbelievable Freeper comments I found
I googled this to see if anything came up for what Tay Tay thought (GWB SINGING it in Spanish), and found this freeper thread. Here are a few (I'm not giving the link, no need):

NOT even in the Olympics do host nations sing our National Anthem in their native language! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, WHAT A SLAP to the American folk! I really hope there will be a HUGE and I mean HUGE backlash!! We oughta sing their national anthem in English(which by the way is a boring ugly song) and see how they like it!..they'll probably take it as a badge of honor..ugh!

I always thought the national anthem was written for Mexicans. After all, the first words in it are "Jose, can you see?"

These people are hilarious -- a SPANISH song has got them this worked up? Wow. As dumb as some of the people are on our end, these idiot really take the cake, don't they? And how they can type all of their racist comments . . . on a COMPUTER . . . tells you how removed from reality they are.

18. Does RoseofTexas realize they're not all from Mexico?
Edited on Tue May-02-06 01:42 PM by JohnKleeb
I see people here on DU refer to them as "Mexicans" too. It doesn't drive me nuts but it's like uhh dude they are NOT all Mexicans. Just because you're hispanic and come from a Spanish speaking country does not equal Mexican. I sincerely do think they're translating it in to Spanish because of love of their adoptive country. You know I understand the arguement that people should learn English however these people who think they should throw away all parts of their culture away are just morons. I still have some of my ancestors culture and I am third-fith generation.

How can Democrats do this. We must all speak English, ¿Comprende.

Lamar is a fat-head once again. This is just ridiculous.

What is Kent Conrad doing agreeing with this moron? Honestly, Conrad worries me sometimes.

Alexander has a crap argument, and Conrad played right into it by comparing apples (The National Anthem) and oranges (The Pledge of Allegiance).

Why talk about immigration when you can complain about the national anthem? Why talk about what we're going to do about Iraq, or gas prices, or healthcare, or the deficit? We've got the national anthem to discuss!! :sarcasm:

Because you can't have a mid-term without a Gay Marriage bill, right? The Rethugs are hitting all the desperation buttons right now. They are really afraid of those mid-terms. Goodie.

25. There is talk about them losing both houses--
First I heard Ted Kennedy say it, and then I heard Tom Harkin say it. Others are more cautious, so I don't know if they were just talking, or what.
Some say the House is more in reach, some say the Senate. But yeah, they are running scared right now. Let's hope it only gets worse for them.
