Presidential hopefuls find lackluster loyalty at home
Constituents may resent losing them to campaign trail

''You start with a group who don't like you, you add a group who think it may not work out, add to that a group who may not want to lose you, and all of a sudden, you're finding a reluctance on the part of your own constituents to update your resume," Miringoff said.

Massachusetts voters have lost two elected officials to the presidential campaign trail in recent years, and voters might not be willing to lose a lawmaker for the duration of the campaign again, said Charles Manning, a Boston-based GOP consultant.

''If people perceive that person is doing a really good job for them, they don't want to see them leave, especially in places like New York or Massachusetts," Manning said.

At first, ''you want to bring them down a peg," said Marshall Wittmann, a scholar with the Progressive Policy Institute and former staff member to Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona. ''People feel that way until the moment they take the oath of office. And then they open up the hometown museum and brag to everyone about how their favorite son ascended to the presidency, which is a testimonial to the genius of their state."

OMG! This means I am not the only person who is selfish at odd times, and, ahm, wonders if I really need to share. OMG! It's not just me. Other people worry about that too!

1. I may never know your pain.
I'll try to feel the appropriate amount of empathy for you poor, poor souls.

3. But, but, but, he is a wicked good Senator you know
Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:22 PM by TayTay
Really, really good Senators don't just grow on trees. It is possible that we could get someone sup-par. What if the voting machines thing happens here and we wind up with a, ahm, well, ack, I can't say it. One of them. There goes Massachusetts.

In all seriousness, this is a part of what the good Senator has to think about when he really decides if he is running. If he does run, he will spend 4 years of a 6 year term on the Presidential campaign trail.

That is not to be considered lightly. The citizenry of the state have a right to ask, "What's in it for me?"

5. I do understand
albeit from a distance.
But your loss would be the entire country's gain. I hear you Mass people are very selfless that way, so let me just say 'thanks' in advance.

In PA, we mostly just laugh to keep from crying and pray for something better.

In all seriousness, I do understand the sacrifice from you and from him. If he does choose to run, God bless him for who he is and what he does. If not, well, the same.

And the rest of you, too, either way.

6. It's not all wine and roses here. We could inflict Romney on the USA
I mean, that is just horrible as that man is a liar and a phoney. Sigh!

We have plenty of things to be humble about. Sigh! Plenty of things. (Including, apparently, inadvertent gloating, which merely temps the gods and should never be indulged in. Oh dear. The lighting will surely come now.)

9. That slime was on my TV today
I was busy, and I looked up because there was some strange and annoying sound coming from the TV, and there he was.
At least it wasn't my TV. The noise was so awful, I thought for a moment I was going to have to buy a new one.
Whew!

2. Unfortunately, I would be happy to see mine go- only not on the
Presidential trail. I live in PA.

4. Ahm, my deepest sorrows.
But, ahm, you know it would be difficult to get a new Senator. I was really, really bad the other day when I was talking to someone about the possibility of Sen. Kerry not re-upping for another Senatorial run in '08. We talked about a few candidates and I said, absentmindedly about one, "No. he can't be a Senator. He doesn't even look like a Senator." I then clapped my hands over my mouth with an OMG gesture. I had no idea I was either that shallow or that spoiled (or both.)

But, so-and-so really doesn't look like a Senator. Senators are tall and striking looking, with deep voices and deeper ideas and present themselves well and are an instant credit to the voters that sent them there. Right? OMG, I think I am spoiled. OMG!

Hey, come to think of it, who else does look like a Senator? I think Warner of VA looks like a long-serving Senator. Baucus of MT looks like a Senator, but his manner of speech is somewhat hesitant. But he does look like a Senator.

Shallow Tay. Oh dear.

7. I'll say, I just don't understand why all the nice Senators are in Mass.
It just isn't fair. The Mass. Senators has reach perfection, ours are still evolving.

8. Ahm, oh dear. That will surely tempt the gods with hubris
Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:35 PM by TayTay
Then again the Red Sox won tonight, so maybe the gods were out at the movies and won't notice that I was not humble tonight.

Oh dear. I take it back. Besides, what about Boxer, Feingold, Durbin, Obama, et al. Pretty damn good, every one of them.

Oh dear. Not humble at all. Bad things will happen now. I can feel it.

10. If I had any one of those Senators
I'd brag about him/her every day. Go on, enjoy it. Nothing bad will happen.
BTW, I got mail from Obama today. Very nice, but I can't send him anything, I'm all KAP'd out.
Do you get mail from other Senators, or do they mostly do that in states with repub senators?

15. If JK got the WH, one of your Congresscritters could run
Edited on Tue May-02-06 12:02 AM by ginnyinWI
for Senate--I think your Reps are also "wicked smart"--better than a lot of states' Senators! Which one would you pick? So much wealth in your state!
None of our Dem Reps are so high-profile that I could see them in the Senate; well maybe David Obey-- but my point about MA still stands!

edit: That reminds me of something: A while back I was at a site called www.findyourspot.com. You take a quiz and you get a list of the best places for you to live. Mine turned out to be Boston--and this was before I discovered JK. So I consider myself an honorary Bay Stater. :)

11. I wouldn't trade my three (two current and one former) for yours
cause I want him for my President!

Please, can I have him, please

13. Who are your Sens?
Ahm, respondent sayeth not about trades. (Anymore tonight. Bad things happen to people who aren't humble. That apparently was my quota of gloatiness for the year, baring Red Sox games.)

I should love it if a smart, responsible and moral person became President. Should he originally come form the state in which I currently reside, well, ahm, that would be something we would learn to deal with eventually. (There, that's better.) Ahm, there are many other good Sens like Sen. Wyden who lead that cool filibuster last week.

14. There are many, true.
I've got Sens. Lautenberg and Menendez and the former Senator turned Governor Corzine.
