Here, have a beer with my (future) Senator.

Bob Casey meetup
May 5, 2006
Finnegan's Wake, Northside, Pittsburgh.

The last time I attempted to meet my future Senator, he was snowed in in Scranton. This time, he was surrounded by a flurry of partying supporters on a gorgeous spring evening at Finnegan's Wake bar, a local Friday night hangout for young and young at heart Dems in Pittsburgh's Northside.
I got to the bar a little after 7 to find all 12 of Rick Santorum's supporters blocking the front door. Not a real obstacle, just sort of in the way (sort of ike Santorum will be come November). One of them was dressed as a duck, which I didn't get and was afraid to ask about, what with Rick's penchant for animals and all. Might even have been Ricky himself in the duck suit, I couldn't tell. Perhaps he was wearing the costume to hide the fact that he has 11 supporters and himself.

The rest were dressed as assholes.

For my $25 contribution, there was free beer (no, thank you), soda (yes, please) and appetizers, including those great little cocktail weenies, to continue the theme of the people out front.

Mr Casey arrived around 8, and spent a few minutes working the room. The first speaker was Luke Ravenstahl, the rather hot and quite young president of Pittsburgh City Council, who introduced my Congressman, Mike Doyle.

Luke, BTW, is Pittsburgh's youngest ever City Council President.

Luke

Mike

Congressman Doyle, for those of you not familiar, is a great speaker with a style that tends to get the room fired up.

"How many people here think we're on the right track?" "Let's see your hands."
"How many of you think the President* doesn't have a clue???"

The crowd loved it.

"...$8 trillion..."
"...$6 billion..."
"$9 billion a month in Iraq and OBL thumbing his nose at us."

Oh, my boy knows his numbers.

"I remember the years of surpluses under Bill Clinton", he continued. "It's a lot more fun to worry about what to do with too much money."

Mike even refered to the Santorum crew outside. "The republicans will be ducking when they have to start answering questions."

What the hell was up with that duck? I have to find out. If anyone knows...

Next up was a video of the life and times of Bob Casey. His background, his platform which, not surprisingly as State Treasurer, began with A Return to Fiscal Responsibility.
A touching moment in the film was when one of Mr Casey's former fifth grade students (he taught grade school back when he had hair) talked about what a great teacher he was. How he told her he wanted her to use her voice, and not listen to those who said she should not.
End of film, short speech by Bob about the need for us to go down a more hopeful path and he was dragged off to an adjacent room for a local TV interview before the handshaking continued.

Some pics from this evening of my future Sen.

Although I missed another opportunity to talk with my (future) Senator, I did get to chat with Congressman Doyle. We talked a bit about an upcoming Dem event and, as he looked up the time and place for me on his blackberry, we discussed the blessings and the curse of being tied to e-mail 24-7. The 'crackberry', for those of you not chained, is the worst invention since the laptop for people who would enjoy having a life outside of work. My suggestion is to turn the thing off at 8pm, but I have a feeling the Congressman doesn't have the luxury. If, however, there's a Dem congressman from PA missing from some critically important vote during a late night session, oops. Sorry.

Good event. Mr Casey will make a fine Senator for PA.

1. If it walks like a duck... must be a duck...
what if it was Sanitorium?

Well GV - he is a definite improvement!
How are the polls looking?

2. Casey is leading in the polls
Last I heard, about 12 pts. I'm trying not to be too complacent, though. Santorum is a weasely bastard.

6. It's early yet - lots of time for Casey to run with the lead.
This race is getting alot of attention.
Mentioned on Washington Journal often.

In Az Pederson is moving in on Kyl. Which is promising, since Pederson has had a slow
start...and even a little backlash from the dems in Az. Pederson is not liberal enough.

Santorum is insane. I think he will be voted out.

3. I think Casey is a fine candidate for PA
Sadly because of that he gets a lot of shit here but I think he even may get the support of my mom's cousin and her family and they've been trending conservative lately due to social issues.

4. Happy you got the opportunity to go.
Seems like it was a nice time. I am a bit worried though, the last polling I saw had Santorun narrowing the gap to within 7 points. I think it is time for the Casey bumper sticker on the old car.

5. How on earth is that possible?
Every time Santorum opens his mouth he sticks his foot in it. Was that a Trib poll?

I think you're right, wisteria. Time to get the bumper sticker out. I wish you could have made it to this event, BTW. It was fun.

12. Here is the poll info. It comes from MSN First Read.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5613476/

The nation’s most hyped race, the Pennsylvania Senate contest between Rick Santorum (R) and Bob Casey (D), is narrowing, a new Philadelphia Daily News/Keystone poll finds. In it, Casey leads Santorum, 47%-41% -- down from Casey’s 51%-35% advantage in November.

It's from the Philadelphia Daily News so I wouldn't start to consider the race to be a nail biter yet. Casey needs to start doing more appearances throughout PA.
Santorum has been very vocal about Casey already. Have you checked out Santorum's campaign sight? It has a lot more personality than he does.

13. Yikes!
Good about Rendell/Swan, though.
Casey does have to get more visible/vocal. I know a lot of people are ABS, but will that get them to the polls?
Time to get busy!
Thanks for posting the link.

7. Another story from tonight
I met a UAW guy who said he would absolutely support Sen Kerry again, that he thinks he has to fight harder when people attack his military service, that bush and cheney are chickenhawks (or something similar), and that Teresa is "really pretty" in person. :-)
He was really pissed about the attacks on JK. He also said Hillary can't win.
This is a guy who doesn't own a computer, so it was from a different perspective than what I usually get.
OK, the guy's a hardcore Dem, so I wasn't really surprised by anything he said, but it was my only Kerry conversation of the evening, and it was a good one.

8. I think it's important for us to get the perspectives
of people either without computers (whaaa?) or of people who do have computers but are not politically obsessed (whatever). I would assume that the majority of Americans fall into one of those two categories.

Thanks so much for your report GV. Sounds like a fun night! As for the guy in the duck suit, I'm beginning to believe that all Republicans are sexual perverts so maybe it had something to do with that. Maybe it was a duck hooker.

11. Good to get a different perspective on things. I think it is very good
that a hard core Dem would support him over Senator Clinton.

PS I'll find the information on the poll Casey vs Santorum and post it.

15. That is good
It's cool that he obviously must have seen Teresa - and must have liked her or I doubt he would have said that. I wonder if the purple states where people saw a lot of the Kerry family might not be the easiest to win back. And the 50 state approach not withstanding - these are still the states that will be the battlegrounds.
