The JK 1971 comment selected tells everything. I think if Kerry would have lost his mind, every shred of integrity that he had and done what Wittless suggested - he would have lost big. No one could have trusted him.

I've defended the DLC before - but just because the Republicans moved to the right, we don't have to become the old Republicans.

They are reactionary neocons. The fact that atrocities occurred in Vietnam still is not real to them nor is the notion that real patriots try to correct the course their country is on when they feel it is wrong. This notion that the war can produce atrocities is always tantamount to treason for them. It's why people like them get the country into wars in the first place. They never learn.

They are incapable of seeing Kerry's 1971 testimony for what it was, the act of a patriot. Likewise they are incapable of seeing dissent for today's war as an attempt to right the horrible wrongs the country has committed in Iraq. These people are not capable of seeing that Bush's War is terribly off course and is hurting America at home and around the world. All they have in their myopic little world is the idea that it is the dissenters who are the troublemakers. They cannot envision a patriotism that seeks change. They are sad and pathetic little creatures devoid of soul.
