Poll question: Which old time movie star does John Kerry most remind you of?
Edited on Sun May-21-06 05:03 PM by _dynamicdems
Okay, so I'm guilty of watching a lot of old movies. These choices are in no particular order...just threw in a few names.

1. Henry Fonda.
It is in the way he carries himself.

2. Gregory Peck
Not only because Atticus Finch is my all time favorite literary hero, but Gregory Peck was a great liberal, scholar and a gentleman.

4. Same answer.
I see a lot of similar qualities in the two of them.

5. I'll be the third here -
Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch has similarities to Kerry in his last Alito speech.

6. Greg Peck was my answer, too
He's so "urbane", gentlemanly and kind--most of his characters were, anyway. And serious.

If you took the "old time" qualifier away, I'd nominate Harrison Ford.

8. It's just like this
"When I think of John Kerry, I think of Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird". In an atmosphere of social divisiveness, fear and hatred, perhaps John didn't have a presidential win in the cards, but he won't let it stop him from being the man of integrity that he has always been.

In the film version, with Gregory Peck, there is a poignant courtroom scene where Atticus Finch seems very much alone in the wake of his heart-wrenching loss in the downstairs chamber of the courtroom, but above him, there are seats still filled upstairs and every person stands in homage while Atticus passes below.

I stand with all who supported Mr. Kerry and salute him for what he tried to do, and what we know he could have done for America. I'm so very glad he'll be fighting for us in the Senate. There's a lot he has learned from this experience and it will make him the most valuable Senator we could have on realistic democracy's side."

10. DEFINITELY
Atticus Finch...Gregory Peck, right down to the hair in the face (which he does not do anymore, but the young JK used to have that stray lock, falling in front...)

13. Sandnsea,
This captures a lot of what I feel/think too. I do hope that Kerry does become President because I trust him more than I've ever trusted any leader since the 60s caused me to be suspicious and because he is just incredibly smart. I agree though that regardless, he is and always will be a man of integrity.

The heartbreak is that he came so close and that he might actually have suceeded in convincing enough people to go out to vote for him, in spite of all the biases in favor of Bush. It will be tough to win against the odds again and to do so he has to risk his position in the Senate. It amazes me that the person who wrote it had so much perspective in November 2004.

I am so glad that Kerry is so clearly speaking from his heart, rather than trying to find the optimal political position. It does show he absolutely meant it when he said the things that were important to him were his family and that he kept his integrity through the election.

14. Jimmy Stewart in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"
...with a bit of everyman, 'natural' Henry Fonda about him.
