"It just reeks of a kind of desperation that the war might end up getting resolved peacefully and what a tragic defeat that would be for the left."
Bingo. I distinctly get the impression that some of these "conspiracy nuts" in GD would prefer there to be full-scale civil war in Iraq and a huge wave of death and destruction just so Bush looks even worse. It's really disgusting, actually. I also get the impression (time for the :tinfoilhat: ) that they relish news of massacres like Haditha so they can point to it as proof that the Iraq war is a crime against humanity, that Bush is the new Hitler, and that our soldiers are the modern day SS. Don't misunderstand me - the world needs to know the truth about Haditha and any incidents like it, the Iraq war IS an abomination, and Bush is certainly a monster. But while I think it's necessary for us to know that incidents like Haditha happened, there are some on the left who seem to relish, even salivate, over news like Haditha, because it gives them more ammo to use against the war. The more horror and death there is in Iraq, the more credence the hardcore anti-war movement has, so it almost seems like they rejoice when news of a new massacre or civilian bombing comes out. I'm talking about a very small component of the anti-war movement, of course; most were horrified about Haditha for all the right reasons, not secretly delighted because it helps further their agenda. But I am not going to pretend the latter type doesn't exist, and sometimes they're the ones who scream the loudest.
I also get the impression that that same crowd kind of wants Bush to bomb Iran just so they can have another war to be against. I saw a T-shirt last weekend at a liberal convention that said "I'm already against the next war," which I frankly found disturbing. I mean, hypothetically, what if North Korea launched a nuclear attack against us and then we declared war on them? Would they be against that war? It just really revealed the mindset of those people for whom it's more important to be "more left than thou" than to actually work constructively for political solutions that minimize the loss of life and help restore some kind of sane balance in the world. They're more worried about being "anti-war" because it's cool/furthers their political aims than out of any concern for real lives lost. Again, it's a small minority, but they tend to be excessively vocal, especially on places like DU.
