The return of a governor
By Joan Vennochi, Globe Columnist | July 20, 2006
WELCOME HOME, Governor Romney.
It took a local crisis. But Mitt Romney finally stepped off the national campaign trail and turned his full attention to Massachusetts, the state he is supposed to be governing.
...
Romney is taking impressive control of the Big Dig debacle. He swiftly mastered engineering details to a point where he almost seems prepared to install new anchor bolts himself.
He is still determined to remove Amorello as chairman of the Turnpike Authority and began legal proceedings to accomplish that goal. But, with good reason, Romney's public statements now reflect a more collective responsibility: ``Republicans and Democrats failed on this," the governor said during one recent press conference.
...
With an eye to 2008, Romney put Massachusetts in his rearview mirror. When the Big Dig crisis struck, he returned home to deal with it.
Now, Romney must make sure no one pins the crisis on the crisis manager.
Poor Mitt. These democrats may be mean to him.
