Sen. Kerry's Comments on This mornings Terrorist arrests in the UK |
|
Statement by John Kerry on Thwarted Airline Terrorist Attacks
Washington, DC – Senator John Kerry released the following statement on the thwarted terror plot:
"We are all incredibly grateful and fortunate that British authorities were able to prevent these attacks before more innocent people could be killed by these ruthless murderers.
"This is a stark reminder that the war on terrorism is global, and extends far beyond Iraq to our very shores. Terrorism is the biggest threat to Americans' security, and this event exposes the misleading myth that we are fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here. In fact, the war in Iraq has become a dangerous distraction, and a profound drain on our financial and military resources.
"Nearly five years after the attacks of 9/11, we are not as safe as we can and must be. Osama bin Laden is still on the loose. The 9/11 Commission's recommendations to secure our most vulnerable infrastructure remain virtually ignored. And, homeland security funding has been cut for cities like Boston and New York.
"It's clear that staying the current course in Iraq is not making the American people any safer at home or abroad, and has hurt our fight in the war on terror. We need to put the focus back where it belongs, and make America as safe as it can and must be."
***********************
Good statement. Matches up with what he has been saying about terrorism in general lately (and that Iraq is forcing us to take our eye off the ball on this) and on OBL and the threat from organized terror cells in general.

a long time. And, he calls out Bush on that bullsh*t message that 'we are fighting them over their.....". I don't know about you, but I am tired of the media and this administration, working as cohorts to scare us all into believing Bush and the Republicans can actually keep up safer, when after more than four years it should be evident that their way is not working. I hate this administration and how they use fear and photo-ops to promote their agenda.

Just for perspective, guys, we all need to look at the law of averages on how unsafe we are. I just think it is highly important that we use Kerry's approach detailed by Whometense's "Kerry was right infinity" thread -- law enforcement and intelligence gathering, as well as his ideological approach to Islamic extremism, by engaging with the M.E. in a constructive manner, and quite frankly, using a containment strategy for Iraq -- instead of containing Saddam Hussein, we will now have to contain the civil war.
The reason why I mention the law of averages is that I know for a fact that I am more likely to be struck by lightening than be killed by terrorists. Why am I sure? Because one week ago, there was a freak thunderstorm and a bolt of lightening hit one of the houses here in my neighborhood. Nobody knew it had happened, but within 30 minutes there was a raging fire that burned off the whole roof, the top floor, and essentially damaged the entire house to unliveable. The firefighters who came very quickly (we're lucky -- they're right around the corner) smartly watered down the house next door first (all the vinyl siding was melted off of it) before that house started burning, and brought a crane up before it put out the big incredibly hot (you could feel the heat in our back yard) fire raging in the house hit by lightening. We watched the news later and discovered the wife was unaware that there was a fire in her house -- her husband got home from work, saw smoke, and got his family safely out (and their cars out of the driveway) before the fire got out of control.
My point for relating this story is how we really need to keep perspective on fear and what endangers us. That is why a president shouldn't have so casually brought us to war with a country that was not an imminent threat. We should watch carefully for when the number of Americans killed in Iraq equals the number killed on 9/11. Then Bush will have essentially killed as many as OBL, that sonofabitch.
