Kerry visits facebook.com

Weird article, really, kind of snarky and clueless, about pols trying to "be cool."

I don't think that's Kerry's point; I see it more as reaching out and taking an interest, and an expression of his natural curiosity. But that's probably way too positive a spin for a political reporter to credit.

WASHINGTON -- Last week, on a trip to the West Coast, Senator John F. Kerry insisted on visiting the Palo Alto headquarters of Facebook.com, the website that lets users set up online profiles featuring information such as their hometowns, favorite films, and whom they've been hanging out with lately.

Looking out of place in a suit and tie, Kerry, 62, shook hands and posed for pictures with the site's young, casually dressed staff, though he missed meeting the company's 22-year-old founder and chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, who was traveling. Photographs of the event were posted on Facebook the next day.

Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, is looking to catch the next wave in cybercampaigning: Starting in September, Facebook will begin selling advertising space to politicians for an undisclosed fee, providing candidates a chance to connect with its nearly 9 million registered users, the vast majority in their teens and 20s.

Edit: nowhere does it actually say that Kerry is going to be buying ad space on facebook, nor that that was the point of his visit.

He looks quite "cool" to me, actually.

I think Kerry has a good understanding of my generation, I don't think he panders to it by pretending to be what he's not. He's often himself and I know that I at least appreciate that.

6. and got a guitar from Bono, a guitar pic from Springstein
and an album dedicated to him from a former member of Nirvana. Too bad he's not as cool as Edwards, who is a friend of what cultural icon?

Can he beat a memmber of the Beatles (as cool as could be in the 60s and 70s),Springstein (the coolest in the 80s - at least in NJ), Nirvana in the early 90s( cool) and U2? Too bad Kerry was never cool.

14. That's true - my daughter has sent me links to her
Facebook page at college. If a college kid links her mom - I assume, it's not cool.

15. Depends on the person . . .
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 09:04 PM by ElizabethDC
I let my mom see my facebook page, but I can assure you that not everyone's is so "clean," lol. Facebook is very, very popular - just about every college student in the country has a facebook page. I don't know whether it's "cool" or not, but it's a necessity, like having a cell phone. If you're in college and don't have a facebook page, people will assume you don't exist. :D So it's good to see that JK is aware of facebook. Evan Bayh has a profile and advertises his PAC through facebook - he's definitely made himself a presence.
