Don't know if you guys have seen the announcement yet, but Adobe has introduced a new program called "Lightroom", which looks to be a direct competitor to Apple's new "Aperture" program. Like Aperture, it's not meant to be a Photoshop replacement, but more of a photography "workflow" application, combining raw conversion, basic photograph-oriented editing, file organization and tagging, printing, etc.
Right now the beta is available for free for Mac OS 10.4 only. The Windows beta is coming in a few months. Final app should be around the end of the year.
I downloaded it and will play around with it some later today.

1. Is this intended for the amateur photographer? |
|
I've only seen ads for Aperature, but it appeared to be directed towards pros who shoot hundreds of photos at a time or maybe a publisng house that has to process and organize a lot of photos. Though I have to admit, my photo files could use some organization!

2. Probably more of a Pro app |
|
Since the emphasis is on raw processing and, as you said, organizing hundreds or thousands of photos, then it's probably geared more towards the pro. And they haven't given any hint on how much it will cost; if it's like Aperture, then it will be around (cough!) $500.
