Formal portrait

Of my cat!

Didn't really set out to take such a picture, but I thought she was striking a nice, portrait-looking pose here.

1. Great shot
Did you use a flash? I love the black background. It really makes her stand out.

3. No flash, just window light

But it was nice, soft, semi-overcast light coming in from outside. Almost like a light box. I like the "single light source portrait" look anyway. Sort of like this guy's work:

Well, sort of. This photographer is William Coupon, very famous for portraits, does covers of Time and Newsweek and things like that.

2. Great Shot... She would be proud.....
Back ground is perfect, the lighting is just right. I love the way half the cat's face is highlighted, the other a tad bit darker. Now you did it, I want a cat again. My wife will shoot me for sure.. ;)

4. Great picture!
If I ever win the lotto big time I'm going to quit my job and just take pictures of cats the rest of my life.

6. That's very nice
Sharp, great lighting, wonderful color.... what's not to like?

I could never get "the dog" to hold any kind of pose like that and she usually gets annoyed when I follow her around so I stopped buggin' her. And Ms F' has threatened to remove a certain part of my body with a dull plastic butter knife if I point the camera at her again.

You study the work of famous photographers? I should spend an evening browsin' and lookin'.... but I always have so many questions like "how the heck did they do that?" at the top of the list.

7. Thanks!
Yeah, cats are much calmer and more still than dogs. My girlfriend has a little Jack Russell terrier, and it's practically impossible to get a good shot of her, she's in constant, nervous, jittery motion (the dog, that is).

I do study what other photographers do. William Coupon, whose pictures I pointed out, has an excellent web site with quite a bit of info on his philosophy of portraits ("it's all about the eyes") and a nice little bio. www.williamcoupon.com

And I'm on Flickr.com, and spend lots of time there just looking at other people's shots. There are some fantastic photographers there. Very inspirational, I get a lot of ideas from there.
