Nor'Easter in Maryland
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 02:59 PM by mutley_r_us
Seems we got close to 18 inches in my neighborhood. Not much for some of you, I know, but huge for Maryland. It was the 12th biggest storm on record for the state. I even heard some "thundersnow" which I've only heard a few times in my life. It was quite fun, and a big workout, walking around in it this morning while it was still snowing a bit.

My dog!

My car!

Maybe I should use one of these for the contest instead of the one I submitted. :P

1. Looks rough.
I went out looking for pictures too. I wonder how many others did. (I didn't stray far from the house, though. It was ugly out. Looks about like it did where you are.)

3. I didn't go too far, and it was fun!
Just through the woods and some nearby apartment complexes. My dog had a blast -- it was the most snow she's ever seen.

2. Send some up our way...
We're in the midst of a fairly prolonged warm spell and all the snow is melting. It could cause problems for the Iditarod next month (although I realize the PETA people would probably be happy to hear that).

4. Whats the Iditarod?
Last month was our warm month. Felt more like spring than winter.

6. The last great race...
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 06:25 PM by Blue_In_AK
Sled dog mushing from Anchorage to Nome, 1100 miles or so. PETA gets all up in arms about it every year, saying it's cruel to the dogs.

http://www.iditarod.com/

I plan to be at the start here in Anchorage shooting pics. HullBoss is volunteering for his third year. It's quite a tradition up here, and I believe will be televised on ESPN - at least they have in years past.

7. I'd be more worried about the dogs with the snow pack melting.
They can more easily break through lakes and such. At least according to Jack London. :P

9. Except for the last week or so
it was WAY below zero out there (I'm talking -40 and such), so I doubt that anything's going to break through even with our recent warm spell. It's likely to get cold again before the race starts - hopefully we'll have more snow.

31. Wow, I didn't even know about this...
We have so many races up here in the wintertime - several sled dog races, snowmachine races, all the cross-country ski races - it never even occurred to me that people would be racing bikes, too. The start in Knik is about 40 miles from here, maybe I can get up there.

33. I didn't know it was possible to ride bikes in the snow.
I can see it if you have the right tires. One of my local channels made a big deal out of a guy who was trying to ride a ten speed up one of the major routes here in the snow. It was kind of funny.

41. "I didn't know it was possible to ride bikes in the snow."
Its not, at least not in snow like you are thinking about.

This guy is not going far.
He will either:
a)hit a hole and crash
b)hit a branch or rock and crash
c) drill himself into a snow bank
d)quickly run out of leg power

Bicycles are limited to packed snow or trails when the snow depth gets over 2"-3".
This is great fun:

Some of the Mountain Bike people have modified their bikes with wide (3"), low pressure tires
for riding the snowpacked trails in this area, but even they can't "ski" across the top of the snow.
The wide low pressure tires make it a smoother ride across the ruts and washboards on the trails.

These get very rough when they freeze hard.

I mostly keep to back streets and plowed trails. Since I do alot of "Urban Exploring", I use studded tires because I never know when I will hit patches of slick ice.

They are wonderful on ice or packed snow, but are hard to pedal on dry pavement (High Rolling Resistance).

This kind of snow (1"-2") on top of asphalt or frozen ground is fun and EZ to ride on with the right tires (and fenders to keep the slop off your face).

I "presume" the Bicycle Iditerod will be on packed trails, but I could be wrong.
I can't imagine they will be able to ride over open snow.

44. Packed snow...
I believe I read on the website that snowmachines go ahead of the bikers and pack the snow for the first "short" leg of the race, but after that you're on your own. It also said to be prepared to push your bike for at least 350 miles. This one is not for the faint-hearted.

11. OMG that looks cold and miserable!
:scared: <-- Shivering!!

I'm so glad I'm in Mississippi right now where they wear parkas when it's 50 degrees out. My former hometown of Monson, MA had 17 inches of snow at 10:30 Suday morning, with over 2 feet expected by the storm's end. When read upside down, MONSON = NOSNOW. So NO SNOW inverted means Monson gets hammered every single time. This is the whole reason I moved half way accross the country. I hate shoveling!

My sympathies go out to you.

12. Hi mutley
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 12:09 AM by CC
Never made it out of the drive way today. I don't care what the "official" numbers are we at had least 20 plus inches here. We spent all day shoveling the hubby's truck out so he could go to work. Will finish trying to get my car out tomorrow, or see if I can just use the car to pack the snow down like we did part of the driveway today. The plows have undone what was done earlier today on the driveway. I don't have pretty pictures like you have but did take a couple through the window screen and all. I hate snow and really miss Fla la la land right now.

The Xterra. Already brushed the show off the hood of the car.

Xterra after forcing way in to start it.

The DH shoveling to get his truck out.

Moon shadows on snow in back yard tonight.

The stick looking thing sticking up in the shadow on the left hand upper third is a 4.5 foot baby tree.

Looks like CC didn't venture outside.

Don't blame ya' CC .... That's some serious snow.

36. And a full moon tonight.
Though where I wanted to go is block, went to see if I could get there. Was afraid of that since it is a dirt road and no one lives back there. So the plows have plowed it in. There is a great hill there with very straight trees. Are you going to try for some moon shadows on snow?
You got some great pictures yesterday. The lamp one is my favorite though hard to not pic the dogs. They look like they were having fun. Only my big one likes the snow, little ones think they are being tortured.

38. Yep, I'm going to give it a shot when I take the mutts out.
Though I'm horrible at at taking night shots, and I don't have a tripod, but it's worth a shot.

Mine love the snow. My oldest was the most into it. She was born right after that big snow we had in 2003 so she's never seen so much snow before. I wish I knew how to post video on the internets 'cause she's so funny in the video hopping around in the snow. :D

She'd never seen more than a few inches at a time before. It was great fun watching her bounce through the snow 'cause she couldn't walk in it.

I like that shot, too, as well as the shot of my car. It was very tiring walking around in snow up to my knees.

I live in Maryland during the week and in West Virginia on weekends. This time of year Mrs. GOPFighter stays in MD 'cause she has a tax business but this weekend she closed the office and came with me to get away from the storm. It didn't work. We got snowed in. :banghead: (I think we stole Alaska's snow this weekend)

Here's our deck this morning:

The first shot is my condo. I went walking around looking for pictures and liked that. I found the snowman out in front of a store.

It was pretty outside. That first shot was my condo. This is off the back porch. You wouldn't believe it, but there's a fairly busy road there.

That was actually after a lot of it had started blowing away. When I first woke up, there was just too much snow to deal with, so I went back to sleep.
