http://www.atoptics.co.uk/index.htmWhen you find places that seem like they might make a nice sunset (or rise), you can use a compass and an ephemeris program to get an idea of where the on the horizon the sun will appear at different times of the year. It seems that the most successful landscape photographers have found that studying the patterns of nature is a good way to be at the right place at the right time, and also revisit sites throughout the year to better understand how those changes in the seasons change the view.
Another suggestion -- check with people who operate tourist shops near the port to see what they might want to carry. My guess is that a lot among those swarms being disgorged throughout the summer are looking for small over-priced pieces to show off. Some very high-end - fancy tags and all - postcards or small framed prints or notecard sets might be effective in suctioning off some of the corpulence.
