looking for a telephoto zoom for a Nikon D-70
any recommendations? I don't mind spending a few hundred bucks, but do not want to go overboard.

Also, I would prefer to stick with a Nikon lens, but would like to hear recommendations about others that are high in quality.

Thanks

1.  I got a Sigma 100-300 in a kit.
Very good glass, and a durable build. Had it for 5 years with no problems. Af is FAST! It would be about 125-450mm with your D70. I hear Tamrons are comparable to Pentax lenses too.

4. Hows the quality of the lens.............
and the pictures it shoots? Especially at 300mm. I need to get a longer lens myself and I am shooting a Nikon N80.

5. As an amature
It's perfect. I've heard complaints from professionals, there's another lense, I don't remember the distinction, but it's more expensive and is supposed to be better, but I've loved it. Everything I've posted here has been either through that, or the D70 kit lense.

Some examples:

Focal length : 112.0mm (35mm equivalent: 168mm)
Exposure time: 0.0020 s (1/500)
Aperture : f/4.2

Focal length : 155.0mm (35mm equivalent: 232mm)
Exposure time: 0.0020 s (1/500)
Aperture : f/4.8

Focal length : 200.0mm (35mm equivalent: 300mm)
Exposure time: 0.0010 s (1/1000)
Aperture : f/5.0

Focal length : 250.0mm (35mm equivalent: 375mm)
Exposure time: 0.0010 s (1/1000)
Aperture : f/5.3

Focal length : 300.0mm
Exposure time: 0.0006 s (1/1600)
Aperture : f/13.0

Focal length : 300.0mm
Exposure time: 0.0006 s (1/1600)
Aperture : f/13.0

6. Oh, and I dropped it today
T-Boned it right on the pavement. It was in my camera bag with the flare guard on, so it was really, really top heavy, and my bag strap was under it, but I thought the strap was just under the bag flap. I pulled the strap out, but it flipped the camera right out of the bag, and it did a perfect summersault and landed barrol first directly onto the pavement. It made me sick to my stomach. It seems find, except for a small crack in the flair guard, which may have saved the lense.

God that hurt.

9. I did the same thing with my D-70.
Took a 1 inch chunk of plastic off the front of the lens. Did that over a year ago and have had no noticable negative impact.

8. wow - under a hundred bucks!
hard to believe for a Nikkor lens.

Anyway - how fast does it focus? Is it comparable to the stock 18-70 that comes with the D-70.

10. It's a pretty good match to the kit lense.
As far as I can tell. A pro might have some complaints, but any limitations it has are out of my range, anyway. Sure as hell can't beat it for the price.

12. I use the Nikkor 28-200
on my D100. It's a good all around lens. I sometimes wish for a little more telephoto, but this is the one I usually keep on my camera. I have the 60 mm "micro" also. Great for close work. I think both of these go for about $500.

Check out B&H Photo/video online. I've bought most of my recent equipment from them and they are very reliable. They also have a good selection of used equipment.

just ordered the Nikkor 70-300 from B&H.

It was a bit longer than I was looking for, but for $99, how can I go wrong.

Thanks all for posting!!!!!!

14. I am currently using an old Vivitar
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 12:49 PM by Bonhomme Richard
70-200 manual focus macro zoom which I bought years ago. The 200mm really doesn't cut it for wildlife shots and not having AF doesn't make my life any easier.
I need to get a AF 300mm without spending an arm and a leg.

I am impressed with the pictures I have gotten with it.
It keep it in the D1 kit, because it meters on the D1.
