Water Falling Over Things 2006, Part IV (DIAL-UP WARNING)
Two Mount Rainier waterfalls on tap today.

The first is Myrtle Falls, one of the most iconic views of the mountain.

Although this view has long since reached cliché status, every time I'd been there before, either a) the falls had been in shade, b) Rainier had been hidden by clouds, or c) both. This is the first time I've seen it in proper photographic conditions. (I suspect it will look even better in a few weeks, when the hills behind it are carpeted with wildflowers -- but that's a matter for another visit.)

The second waterfall is found by the Grove of the Patriarchs, and goes by the unimaginative, if redundant, name of Falls Creek Falls.

This is not only (IMHO) a beautiful waterfall, but one of the easiset to shoot of any I've visited. This fall is quite literally right by the side of the road...all you have to do, once you spot it, is pull over into the turnout a few feet away, put up your tripod on the sidewalk and snap away!

It's not the biggest waterfall around, but it offers enough detail to make an interesting subject.

1. All excellent!
The first makes me feel like I'm on the outside viewing the edge of the world and where it falls off. :wow:

2. Beautiful.
Hot (90) and very dry here.
I wanted to stick my head under the waterfall and cool off.
I could FEEL it.
Thanks for the rush and the beautiful imprint on my mind's eye.
You, Blue, and RadFem, are giving me a case of Mountain Envy.
:hi:

3. You've done so many great waterfalls
But I think the first Falls Creek Falls shot is my new regnaD kciN favorite. Fantastic work, as always.

6. Exposure info for all shots...
Myrtle Falls: f22 at 1/40 second, 22mm focal length.

Falls Creek Falls: f22 at 1/40 second, 20mm focal length.

Falls Creek Falls top: f32 at 1/2 second, 70mm focal length.

Falls Creek Falls bottom: f36 at 1/2 second, 45mm focal length.

All shots: Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D, 18-70mm kit lens, ISO auto.

P.S.: Good to see you back! And don't sell yourself short -- there's a lot of Colorado out there to photograph.

7. I should also add...
...that part of the reason for the dynamic range you mention is, as usual, shooting in RAW mode and processing it in ACR. That really helps recover highlight and shadow detail that would otherwise have been blown out in JPEG.
