The world better watch out!
Cause I got myself a Canon 5D SLR complete with full-frame sensor, 12.8 MPs and a $3,000 price tag that left me that much in debt.

But at least I will no longer be the laughing stock among the Canon users in the DU Photo Group because I only had a measly 10D. ;-)

Words cannot describe this camera. But pictures can. So let me begin.

This is me shooting into a glass building with the camera set at 1600 ISO. Yes, 1600. Normally, you would get a lot of noise (grain) at this level. Now I did use a noise filter as I processed this, but even then, it was still very little noise to begin with.

This is the same picture, but cropped. I was hoping that the "5D" would be visible, and it was before I uploaded them on to PhotoBucket, which I think further reduced the size. And no, that is not a wedding band. That is my Irish Celtic ring from my days of living in Dublin. It's actually my left hand, but the reflection makes it look like my right hand.

Nothing fancy about this shot, but please take note of where it says "Bicycles must be walked on overpass". That's my silver Honda Civic in the background.

This is the entrance to the Metrorail overpass. I didn't use the noise filter on this one even though I shot it at 1600 ISO. Speed was 1/15 and aperture was f/22 (for depth of field).

So much for that rule requiring you to walk your bikes on the overpass. This was shot at 1600, f/22, 1/13 of a second. I might enter this one in the Portals Contest. That is, if Immad2 lets me switch. But I'm still not sure if I want to do it.

Shot at 1600, f/22, 1/25. That's a girl on a bike, but it didn't come out too clear.

I guess there is no rule against jogging on the overpass. Shot at 1600, f/22, 1/25 of a second. This is another one I would consider entering in the Portals Contest. What do you guys think?

Now check out this guy down below. He is shaving. This was shot at 400, f/4.5, 1/160 of a second.

Here's a closer look.

And an even closer look.

This is the Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach. I shot this handheld at 1600, f/2.8, 0.5 seconds. I'm going to come back to this memorial with my tripod and shoot it at 100 ISO for a sharper image.

From the moonroof of my car in downtown Miami. Shot at 1600, f/2.8 and 1/5 of a second. I was using my 24-70 lens and it was shot at 28mm.

An apartment building on Miami Beach. Shot at 1600, f/2.8 and 1/13 of a second.

The Downtown People Mover. Shot at 1600, f/2.8 and 1/4 of a second.

1. Gee, for that kind of money you could have bought a Nikon!

(Actually, since I've moved to Konica Minolta/Sony, I no longer have a dog in that particular hunt.)

2. Don't you already have a lot of Nikon lenses?
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 03:57 PM by RagingInMiami
EDIT: Does Nikon even make a full-sensor camera?

3. No and no...
The Nikon I've been using (Coolpix 5700) is a fixed-lens model with an 8x zoom.

Until the KM5D, I've never owned a DSLR. The only interchangable-lens models I've owned have been 35mm, a Minolta SR-T200 and a Canon A-1. And, while I had a few lenses for the latter, none of them were autofocus, so I had no "brand loyalty" while deciding on a DSLR. If I had had a large investment in autofocus Canon glass, I'd have probably been looking at the 5D as well. Starting from scratch, however, there's a lot of good used Minolta lenses that will work with the Alpha mount, plus a new line of rebadged KM glass coming from Sony, along with some Carl Zeiss lenses for that mount that will work on KM digital bodies as well.

And, no, Nikon has yet to introduce full-frame digital. They seem pretty wedded to the DX form factor.

You still shy about not getting the 16mp $8 Grand 1Ds?;)

I like that bridge shot (man on bike). Looks like Space Mountain at Disneyland.

A photojournalist of your caliber deserves a camera such as this. :applause:

11. I can't wait until the next big protest
I'll have my 24-70 on my 5D, which means I will be capturing a lot more of the protest than I would with my 10D because of the full-frame factor which gives me a wider angle.

But I will also have my 70-200 with a 1.4x on my 10D to get the telephoto shots. And with the 1.6x crop factor, it gives me even more length than I would get on my 5D.

7. Congratulations and good luck!
The 5D seems to be a great camera, and well beyond my means at this time, I finally moved from my Olympus E-10 to an E-1 in January when the prices hit very nice lows. My entire kit cost less than your body alone, and suits my needs (though I realize it falls far short of the 5D, at least it's weather-sealed which comes in handy when shooting water rides at amusement parks).

10. Thanks
I never thought I would spend this much money on a body, but I see this a business investment because now I'm starting to pick up more photo assignments.

8. Look out! He's got a full-frame sensor.
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 11:19 PM by Gregorian
Very nice. The arguments and fears of the full-frame sensor rage on in the forums. I hope you enjoy it. Nice.

Hey, that means you can use regular lenses. That is very cool.

Edit- ARGH! I just went back into the archives on Dpreview, and reeducated myself with FF CCD sensor and lens discussions. And high ISO noise versus the D200. And on and on. Phew. It really is a lot of stuff.

Well, it's an exciting time in technology.

9. It's been so long since I've had a real wide-angle that I forgot ....
that is also comes with drawbacks, specifically, it can cause distortion.

But I'm not complaining. There have been too many times in the last two years that my 20mm was limited to 32mm where I ended up missing shots.

12. Well deserved, and certain to be put to good use!
You have the rare ability to do documentary photography (for most of us it just comes out as snapshots) with photography as art. The pix you show here are additional proof, if any was needed.

15. Thanks, Cons
They say a camera doesn't make the photographer, but it sure as hell helps.

13. Watch out. Indeed
Do you ever hang with the Canon people down in FL? If not, you should. Go to one of the Canon workshops or "shoots". The Canon reps know some neat little "secrets" about the 5D that you won't find on the web or in the manual... like setting the camera up to duplicate virtually any kind of film. Stuff like that.

I saw a very large print done with the 5D about a month ago that blew me away. It was taken right from the camera with no shoppin'... Being the great photo journalist that you are..... you should look into this. Removing the "photo shop" step in getting your pics out quickly would definitely give you an added edge.

Have fun!!!
:hi:

14. I have a few photographer buddies down here
But they're all into Nikon.

One of the top photographers in the world, Seth Resnick, lives down here. He is the guy who shoots the advertisements for Canon that you see in the photo magazines. He offers several workshops but they're very expensive.

Other photographers I've talked to who have taken the workshops said it was well-worth the money. Maybe one day.

And good luck with buying the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. That is on my long-term list of things to buy. Next on my list is the Lowepro slingbag.
