The September contest will be
before and after photos of the work you do in CC's kitchen. The work involves demolishing a
wall, drywall, cabinet, counter, appliance replacement and laying floor tile. All tools and supplies will
be provided as will be a spot to sleep and food. Bring your own camera, there is a computer you can
use with processing software and internet access.

This is the thread to add your input as to alternative themes. Once ideas are posted I will do a poll for votes.
If there are no ideas you may start scheduling when you will be here to start work for the before and after kitchen
remodeling.

1. I'd send HullBoss your way
except we're busy stripping down and rebuilding our downstairs bathroom. I get him first.

5. Plenty of work here so I can wait until
you are done, so send him on down when that bathroom is finished. You could come with him, leave him to work with Terry while we go sightseeing and picture taking.

2. How about something simple
Like a Realistic Portrait. No Glamor shots but a study of the human face, with all of it's lines and character, age etc. OR

a more lose interpretation of Youth and Elder "Something Old, Something New" There is a lot of room for creativty there

6. I like both your ideas
but will leave it to the group. There are some here that claim they can't take people pictures.

8. those that feel they couldn't take people pics

I think we can throw portraits out. Your right it might be too rigid.

Something Old something New, could be anything! could be a old tennis shoe and a chic high heeled shoe.

Could be a dead gnarled tree and a shiny new leaf. Or something old fashion and something ultra Mod. So architecture photos.. that covers people, nature and buildings depending on what your interpretation of it may be.

Ah well it's just an idea to float..

btw I love red in a kitchen! I think we'll be going through a remodle of our kitchen soon enough. And i'm not looking forward to it

4. All the designing is done, but thanks
for the offer. And where were you when I was trying to decide on counter color? Oh and I like natural wood so the cabinets are beech with a clear finish. More than the counters where were you when they gave us the wrong primer for red paint? Now that we have the right primer (free) and more red paint (free too, I threw a major fit in the store) it looks great with only two coats. Actually though it is taking longer than I planned we are getting there. Finishing the nook this week then it is tearing out and putting in which involves moving one wall. :rofl:that it sounds easier than working around what is there.

11. Next time give me a heads up on your design plans
Silly you :P

What's interesting, even though am sure you are probably more of a realist, is that several people I've worked with in bringing their design visions to life seem to have this image burned into their brains that it should all be done pretty quickly, just like on HGTV. Those 30-minute shows make it all look so simple, when in reality, it takes weeks of planning, staging and implementing.

I did this teen room from start to finish, and it was not a major redo (no architectural changes), and was one of the more simple jobs I've done. It took a little over three weeks from strat to finish in terms of planning, shopping, meetings with the homeowner and daughter, and actual work.

24. ROFLMAO
Actually, the room redo was her mom's idea, and a B-day gift to daughter (and, I think, was even more for mom's sanity to some extent...)

The teen actually worked with me on this project, and I had her do the basic furniture sanding, showed her some paint techniques for walls and furniture...and all along she kept whining, "But, it's ALWAYS done in 2 days on TV!! This is more like work!"

19. Wow what a difference and it is
beautiful. Now the question is, did someone threaten the teen with long slow painful torture it they didn't keep it clean?
I like HGTV for ideas but I do tend to comment that there is no way it only took two days unless they have dozens of people that can work and stay out of each others way.

The thing with our kitchen is even moving a wall over a few inches it is still long and narrow. Moving the wall to straighten it so I can have more cabinets and counter space. Oh and to move the door so it makes sense. I was going to keep things light because of it. Finally decided to get over that since I want a floor that won't show dirt as soon as anyone or thing walks across it. I also swore to never use white/light grout on a floor again.

23. Go with pebble tech flooring (is an epoxy resin applied flooring)
No grout, easy to clean, non-slippery.
But, if you ever do decide on the pebble tech epoxy flooring, don't consider the lowest bid the best deal. There's a practiced technique to get it right, and quality of products used to create on installation varies greatly. Always ask for actual samples of work, both pics and sample item.

Have a personal dislike of tile floors, especially after just moving out of a 1700 sq. ft. place that has ALL tile floors :yoiks:

You may want to consider using a tile and grout sealer after you're all done.
http://www.aquamix.com/for_home_use/the_aquamix_difference/testimonials/

Tile and grout should be sealed (and resealed every so often 2-3 years...follow mfgr. recommendation) to keep all of the components from degrading over time (after all, it's basically all sand and dirt.) And, instead of using cleaners on the tiles, use just water for basic clean up. Have found a water solution of 3-5 Tbsp. bleach to 1 gal. water, and a gentle scrubber (buy cheap soft toothbrushes, or a hand nail cleaner brush) works well to clean grout. Just remember to go easy so as not to crack, supersaturate, or otherwise break up the grout.
(...wear gloves...bleach even in its diluted form is hard on skin)

9. You're cute, CC. My house next! How about 'multiples' and has it
been done? I mean any image over 2, in whatever venue you want, from people to landscapes to buildings to whatever. After all, I've read that a line of three is interesting...
Just a thought.:freak:

15. Animals
Alternately, I'm going to put "Personal Best" forward again. In other words: No Theme. May or may not confuse the Lounge, but it would be fun for us, and that's the point, isn't it?

22. I like the personal best as a
challenge more than as a contest theme. Challenges we keep in the group and we are better at telling why we voted one over another. With a person's personal best I think they deserve more feedback than the lounge would provide. So would you be up for a side challenge in the group?

16. You don't want me anywhere near your Kitchen
From prior polls there are two Themes that seem to come up from time to time but never quite get the votes to become all official like:

Motion/Movement and After Dark(Night)
Fermé Août, Trees, Unity, and Churches are a few others that seem to have been popular.

And for those that don't have a Score Card, all the Themes of prior contests/challenges to date:

No Theme
Winter/Cold
Cemeteries
Green
No Theme
Light & Shadow
Flowers
Water
Reflections
Hot Days of Summer
Strength
Fall/Autumn
Extreme Processing
Macro/Close Ups
Absence of Color (B&W)
Architecture
Juxtaposition
Something Old
Showing Their Personality (People)
Portals
Texture

And a few prior Theme Polls.....

Simple = door (not portal, which is very broad)

Simple, such as egg, leaf, bug, shoe. Get the idea?
