please help with a question about posting photos

i cant figure out how to upload photos to du...i followed the instructions but no luck...please help..i use picasa for emailing and sorting and uploading but i have photoshop etc...would be easier to just be able to email from picasa since they shrink them down to a reasonable size for viewing..

cant believe i just discovered this group...thanks to posting your photo contest in gd....ive been here for a couple years but never ventured out of the lbn or greatest..came here for political info and news...and now i discover so many great photographers...


please help...dont know if its a good thing or not that i found this group since i already spend too much time here at du

1. from a RANK amatur:

the photo needs to be on a webite- I use photobucket- you upload your photo to THERE- then you copy and paste the url from THERE into your DU post.

I know someone can give you better directions....

5. A pictures location should have an file extension on it like...

.jpg .bmp .gif etc

It would look sort of like this... only without the spaces to make it and not a pic show, your host site, names and files of course :)

9. You're using a url that will let us see if we click ut doesn't show the picture

... right click on the picture... click on properties... highlight the url... remove extra stuff after the file extension (I put it in bold)...

edited to add a suggestion... you might want to resize your photos down a bit (800600 pi). They're a size and well done enough that might be stolen and for dial-up users like me the load time is horrible.

4. As jhain said Photobucket is good & free (I have an account there as well) but

I think you can use Picasa's web album as well. You would just do a right click, properties, select all for the pics location and then paste the url of the pic here.

After finding Picasa handy I just signed up for the Picasa album to see what it's about (made sure it's not public share). It's not bad although I think I much prefer Photobucket. :)

From any picture host putting a pic here is pretty easy.. just paste the url/web location of where it's located into your DU post.

14. You're using Photoshop CS ??

There should be a "save for web" function.... hang on....

RESIZE by clicking on "Image" at top bar then click on "Image Size". Change "Resolution" to 72-100 then change the size by changing the "pixel width" to 800.

Then click on "File" and click on "Save for Web". Over at the right you'll need to set the file type to JPEG... you can then set the quality (and file size) Then at the bottom left you'll see the file size. Try to keep it under 200K so you don't "kill" the dialupers.

On EDIT... then you'll need to upload your new lean - mean - resized photo to your acccount. After it's uploaded just remove the gobbly goo after JPG and you are in biz.

15. well, im lazy...but i just figured out i think, that i need to resize all of the photos

for du before putting them in the web site...picasa shrinks them down but im beginning to think not really...so i just learned a lot this am...i think this one will work...

16. Seeing a small pic now

One thing to watch for is using a dash in the filename. I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.8 and I had to right-click on what appeared as a placeholder in your post, then choose "View Image". This quirk may also affect viewing from IE. If you eliminate the dash, the pic will show without viewer intervention.

Love to see this image bigger. It's beautiful.

17. A BIGGGGG THANK YOU...for teaching me how to do that...

although i must admit im still having trouble..i emailed picasa to ask if there was a way of having the photos be the same size as appear on their web site...hope so because its a lot of work to resize all of these...much rather be taking photos or playing in photoshop..

i still have heaps...and i mean heaps..of photos to upload to the website...still getting the hang of that...so please take a look if you have a sec...
