Any way to add manual focus screen to Nikon D80?
In low light, I prefer to use manual focus so that focusing light does not cause the subject to shut his or her eyes. It is hard to do since there is not split-image focusing screen. Is there any way to add one? What up?

1. I have no idea what you're talking about
:dunce:

"focusing light"..... "split-image focusing screen"......

On the P&S I use for infrared it uses a kinda' harsh laser light to "mark" the focus point. Nikon DSLR's have this thingy too? I can shut this off on the P&S. On the 20D I don't have any phasers that shoot out when I'm goin' totally manual. I can't keep up with all this techno-mumbo-jumbo.

My guess is that there must be a way to turn off your photon torpedoes. There are a bunch of Nikonians round' here... hopefully someone will chime in.

Beam me up
:freak:

2. The focusing light only works in autofocus.
That's not the point. When manually focusing, there is no way to know if the image is focused or not especially in low light. A manual film SLR has a focusing screen in the viewfinder. The center spot has a split-image or gradiant range finder. When the split image merges into a single image, it is in focus.

The D-80 has the AF points showing, but no focusing screen for manual.

3. The only thing I know of is the "KatzEye" viewfinder screen

from Europe. Pretty pricey, about 175 euros, I believe.

BTW, I just got my D80 in today. Woo-hoo!!

5. zoom focus, shutter delay, AF lock, and the manual toggle
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 11:59 PM by BrightKnight
I was an old school manual everything film guy until I bought this camera. I'm still trying to get a handle on all of the auto stuff.

The manual way to get around the problem would be to zoom in, focus and zoom out again.

There is a shutter delay feature that might help. The feature adds a delay after you shoot to reduce camera shake.

You could simply toggle the manual focus lever in the bottom left after focusing.

The auto focus lock feature should work.

Toggling the camera to AF-S (single) would be better that AF-C (continuous). The AF button is on the top right.
