I’m going to add a “prize” for the May contest
Haven’t finished it yet, but it will be a 32 page Hardcover Book featuring all the contest photos up through April. Maybe it will pull in a few new participants, and maybe it will motivate the ‘regulars’ to push the envelope a notch or two. Anyhoo…. I’m throwing in this “prize”. Can’t afford to do it every month, but I’ll do it for May (and maybe June). Figure it’s the least I can do to make up for all my over-bearing “alpha threads”. :D

I might also print an extra copy to auction at the DU marketplace with the proceeds going to DU.

1. two questions
Gorden

Please explain the contest process to me. Is there anyone person or place that is in charge of that?

Second--if you do make a book and DU does accept it, as in the Plaid Adder book, in view of Andy's story documented here on DU, wouldn't it be a great idea if a certain percentage of the sales went toward a charitable foundation--such as any foundation that does research on pancreatic cancer for example.

2. The contest.
The winner of the previous month's contest is responsible for either organizing and running or finding someone else to organize and run the next month's contest. Whoever runs the contest is exempt from entering that contest. Other than that, anything goes.

We usually determine the theme by group vote, although that didn't happen this last time.

I can't speak to the book idea. It's an interesting idea, though. Nice to have you with us, Malva. :hi:

3. What intheflow said........
Regarding the contest and all.

I only started the Theme thread cause' I thought it'd be a good idea to get it going right away. You'll notice that I called it the "Unofficial" Theme thread. Technically someone else, as flow said, should be handling this. However... it looks like I might need to start an "Unofficial - Official" thread ....... :silly:

The "book" isn't a "book" per say. It's just a "prize" I'm offering up. I'll only print 2 or 3 copies, and maybe an extra for the June contest. No more. The resolution of the photos I have from the contests are no where near being high enough to do a like a real .... "book". It's really just a photo album of sorts. Not much more. But it will be "unique" and "special". Something that only the contest winner(s) (and maybe someone in an auction) will have.

Since there may be only one extra copy for auction I thought it best to give the proceeds to DU. Afterall... without DU there would be no Photography Forum.

I had thought about asking people to chip in for a Gift certificate to amazon or some online Photography place but I felt that would be unfair to do. Givin' this "booming economy" :-( we're living in right now. So... I came up with this "book" idea that I'll do on my own for a month or two.

Does all that make sense?

4. I think you are going to have copyright issues
I'm pretty sure that no one agreed to surrender their rights to their photos just by entering the contest. If they did, let me know. I don't often sell my photos but it happens occasionally and I make a point of not entering contests that ask me to surrender my rights to future publication.

I think you are going to have to ask each person in the book if they agree to have their photos duplicated. The advantage is at that time you can ask them if they have better resolution copies suitable for printing.

I deliberately post only low-res photos anywhere on the internet and I doubt I'm the only one. It doesn't mean that higher res photos are not available for a good cause.

and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

5. It wouldn't be violating any copyright laws
I've been writing/publishing for a small Art APA (and related pubs) for years. I know all the ins and outs of copyright laws. There are many times when I do have to contact the Artist (or their family) directly and get their blessing, but I'm well aware of the the who, what, when, how, and why of copyright laws.

That said... if you feel that this is "wrong" in anyway I'll nix the whole idea. It certainly wasn't my intention to piss anyone off or violate a perceived right to a persons property. I'd like to contact everyone directly and get a high resolution photograph but it'd be very time consuming on my part.

Like I said.. this is just a "Photo Album".

8. I for one offer my entry freely for use in your book.
The only condition being that I can still use the image in whatever way I see fit in the future. Print away, and if you need it in higher resolution, let me know.

6. Also.....

You need to let me know if you're uncomfortable with this.... Or, anyone else for that matter....

If so, you (or anyone else) need to let me know so I can delete their photograph.

10. Please make sure you have everyone's permission to reproduce their work
That's definitely a copyright issue - you can't publish and distribute work without the artists' permission unless it falls under fair use - and this doesn't look like it would.

7. I like the idea, however...
If you're going to use my picture (which you have my permission BTW) I demand a copy!

In exchange, I may consider giving you a discount price on an original work of art...

Mull it over if you will...

9. Consider it done
Permission? I don't need no stinkin' permission!! Have your lawyers lawyer contact the firm that represents my lawyers lawyers lawyer and we'll duke it out. :silly:

Was shootin' the shit with some friends the other day. We are calling the 00's the "I Own It Generation". Raygun created the selfish-arrogant "Me Generation" and now bush* has created the selfish-arrogant-possessive "I Own It Generation".

If ya' haven't sold The Pipe yet PM me. It'd be a good Fathers Day gift for my best friend. But then you'd take away my "budget" for doing this "black market - bootleg" photo album as a prize for June.

Oh well..... June winner??!!! You're screwed. Sorry.

11. I missed this thread earlier
But you have my permission to use my photos both for the prize and the gallery site.

I'm not too worried about losing sales since my original files are from 3mb up to 100mb in size and the ones I post here are usually in the sub 75kb range. The original silver-gelatin selinium toned print of the cord photo I submitted looks like a totally different photo compared to the digital version.

One suggestion though on the gallery site would it be possible to put links to our websites (for those of us that have them anyway) or at least email addresses for people to contact the artist directly. That may again get into making it a big hassle but something to look into at least.

12. If you plan to make this book
Edited on Sat May-28-05 10:48 PM by EarlG
you will first need to obtain the permission of every photographer whose work you plan to use, otherwise you will be violating their copyright. Just something to bear in mind before you decide to proceed with the project. I'm going to lock this thread now. If you want to continue with the project, you may start a new thread once you have acquired the necessary permissions.

On edit: please do not start a new thread until you have contacted Skinner or myself to let us know that you have the permissions.
