Remodeling fun!
I bought this 1973 mobile home in November. It's really coming together! All I have left to do is have the red oak laminate floors installed, which will happen in about 2 weeks. But I thought I'd show a couple of before/after photos of the progress so far.

Dining room -- before

Work done: tore out wall on the right, painted over paneling, tore out carpet.

Dining room -- after

Check out the 70s-riffic vinyl that was under the carpet.

Guest Bedroom -- before

Work done: tore out built-in desk, painted over paneling, tore out carpet.

Guest Bedroom -- after

Kitchen -- before

Work done: tore out wall between kitchen and dining room, tore out cabinet that was hanging near hallway, painted over paneling and cabinets.

Kitchen -- after

Living room -- before

Master bedroom -- before

Work done: removed built-in desks, painted over paneling, tore out carpet

For those that are interested, all of my furniture was bought off Craigslist except for the coffee table, stainless steel dining table (chairs were bought off craigslist, though), and the shoji screen in the guest bedroom.

1. What a change!
Your work in that kitchen really opened it up. Allof the painting has a major impact on the look of that interior...a good impact! That is one of the reasons I enjoyed painting for a carrer; it can make such a dramatic change.

Can't wait to see shots from when the floors are in!

Getting rid of that wall really was the thing to do.

7. Thanks!
And I bought this mobile home for $11,000. I will have put about $4000 into the remodeling when I am done. It's in really good shape structurally, and it has new gas heater, hot water heater, and newer appliances except for the stove. So I think I got a great deal on it, and plan to live in it forever if I can!

4. From a half-price furniture website
I bought that table about 6 years ago. I forget the website I bought it from, but it was about $250 for the table and chairs that came with it. The chairs were pretty flimsy, though, and I replaced them with the restaurant chairs I got from craigslist.

I'm in the process of re-doing a mobile home too, mine is from 1994 and is 18' wide (single wide and a half)

unlike your paneling, I have vinyl wall paper and (shudder) expansion joints. I need to repaint all my cabinets too

we did a LOT of work when we moved in 18 months ago, I'm just getting up to speed for the second round

your pics give me incentive.....

edit to add, check into new laminate counters, you'll be amazed how cheap they are and how fast they go in. I have pink in my old house and was forced to replace it to sell, if I'd known how easy and cheap it was, i'da done it years before

9. Done!
Thanks for the suggestion. I actually like the 70s-riffic green crackle laminate counters I have, and the 70s flowered wallpaper.

My big project for next year will to be to do an entire bathroom remodel. Replace the tub/shower with a tiled shower, new toilet, new pedestal sink, new tile floor, and probably paint over the wallpaper that is in there currently.

Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 01:30 PM by AZDemDist6
that and new flooring throughout

here's some pics of before and after

before (note the tiny shower in the mirror)

work done, shower, tub and vanity torn out, new walk in shower installed (stem wall built, tile and fixtures)new flooring, we left the other vanity intact

after

that final pic was before we did the final cleanup but we still have to paint the rest of the room (the rest of the House actually LOL)

11. Wow, I love the shower!
Since I'm in a mobile home, I'm kind of constrained about the type of shower or tub I put in, because some of the pipes actually set about 6" up from the floor (the tub base hides them, but it makes the tub very shallow and basically unusable as a tub).

I'm thinking of expanding the bathroom into my guest bedroom a bit, to make room for a garden tub/shower combination, and move the toilet to the other side of the room. I'm also going to get rid of the double sink and just have a single sink/vanity to open the bathroom up more.

13. But you're in Arizona
I don't think you have an issue with your pipes freezing. I don't know if I could do that here. But I will definitely find out! That would make things so much easier, if I didn't have to buy a 'mobile home' tub or shower base.

14. I'm in a mobile also.
I really like the living room. Lots of windows and airy looking. Especially after you painted the paneling.

16. All those windows were a big selling point for me
I have 8 windows in my living room and 5 windows in my bedroom. Since they are on the east and west ends of my house, both rooms have windows on three sides. I have mountain views out of the south and west windows of my house.

17. Wow! How fresh and airy everything looks now! You did a beautiful job.

The wall between the kitchen and dining room must have made for a very tight fit. It seems like every room grew twice as big with all the painting. I love the wide-open living room, and the carved backs of the dining room chairs, and the over-sized knobs on the kitchen cabinets. The new floors will really look great.

I have to wonder what was going on with all the claustrophobic paneling in the ‘70s.

So, how many gallons of paint did it take?

18. It took 6 gallons of paint and 4 gallons of Killz primer
I do have some of the red and beige left over.

The knobs on the cabinets are the original ones. They were just hard to see on the dark paneling.

I LOVE those chairs. I think they are my best Craigslist find. Restaurant chairs last forever, too!

I can't take full credit for the paint job, though. I hired a painter to finish when I realized I couldn't finish it myself before the end of time. I was sick for 6 weeks and then in the hospital, then 2 more weeks before I felt back to normal. I couldn't live with the wood paneling one more minute, so I hired the rest done. He did a great job. I did all the prep work, though, sanding the walls, taking off outlet and light switch covers, blinds, etc. And tore out the wall and built-in desks.

19. Very nicely done! My own trailer remodel
was done on one that was sheetrocked, but the sheetrock had paper on it to look like paneling. The paper was heat sealed and slick, so it was a real job to get it off the walls so I could tape the joints and mud the whole business up. I still have the wallpaper covered furring strips that were used to conceal the joints, I use them as warp separators when I'm winding a large warp onto my rug loom.

I also tore out built ins. There was a hutch in the kitchen that wasted floor space and was useless for real storage. I found an antique canning cabinet that fit perfectly and waded in with a crowbar. The people who sold me the cabinet hauled the old hutch away, said they could use it as a display counter. There was also a useless cabinet in the bath that I replaced with shelving and a towel rack.

In many ways, I miss that old trailer very much. Every inch of its 768 square feet was well planned except for that stupid hutch. It's one of the most comfortable places I've ever lived and was ridiculously cheap to heat and cool. If I could have had it moved to a vacant lot in the area I'm living in now, I would have. My present 1300 square feet are poorly planned and I'm about to start taking a crowbar to part of it.

Trailers are some of the coziest housing around and are very much preferable to living in an apartment or condo. Yours looks beautiful.

Good job!

20. What a beautiful remodeling job, and you managed to get
most everything in colors to match Sterling! You did a huge overhaul, and must be relieved that it is nearly complete. Relax awhile and enjoy your lovely new digs.

BTW, I love your coffee table. It is quite unique.

The floors are going in on Thursday! I'm so excited!

I LOVE my coffee table. I got it from http://nyfurniture.net/index.php . It's one of the few pieces I have not bought on Craigslist.
