Wild portraits
Decided to try to catch some of the winter birds at the feeder. I went for the plain little brown birds because it always surprises me how beautiful the really are. Not plain at all when you get a chance to really look at them. It only took about 5,000,000,000,000 or so shots to catch a couple decent ones.

Waiting to get to the food.

Yum

Mine, all mine.

Hey, one bird at a time.

I always feel so sorry for the birds this time of year. Seems like their feathers would hardly keep them warm enough. Then again watching them splash in water when it is 30 degrees something helps them stay warm. Brrrrrr

1. These are really nice, CC.
Birds are so hard to get good shots of (unless you're Maestro), but these look great. We have hundreds of little redpolls and Bohemian waxwings that hang around our bird feeder during the winter, but I seldom get more than blurs when I try to take their photos. I think they must be shivering because even when it seems like they're holding perfectly still I can't get a sharp shot.

2. Have to have a fast shutter
no matter what. Most of mine were blurred, these were lucky shots.

I put the feeder right outside the sliding door. Set up the tripod with the camera on it and left it there for a couple days. The birds got used to it, and me walking to it. Then set the focus on one spot in manual and crossed my fingers. After a few trillion tries finally got something. lol Hardest part was remembering to walk around the camera and tripod, or catch if fast when I ran into it.

3. I can't leave a tripod up unfortunately
because the bird feeder is right outside our front door. They don't seem too bothered by my presence when I open the door, but it's too cold to leave it open for long so all I can do is take a quick snap.

5. Nice images.
You have the ubiquitous European House Sparrow and a white throated sparrow at your feeders. The third and last photo show some great detail. Again, great captures.
