Pied Billed Grebes and a shoveler from White Rock Lake, Dallas

I do not do much shooting of ducks and other water-loving, diving, floating water birds, but I gave it a shot a few weeks back. This is nothing spectacular and certainly not unusual but this was the first time I was able to photograph these guys without one diving under the water before I could snap a pic. The light is a bit harsh, but I tried compensating by closing the aperture and/or upping the shutter speed. I shot these with my 40D and my 500mm on my tripod.







This one is a tad soft, but I like the open beak.


There were also two Northern Shovelers nearby, but I couldn't get them in the right light so this is as good as it gets.

1. Grebes seem to sense when you're trying to photograph them.

I've had that diving issue with them, too, and you never know when or where they're going to pop back up. We always have a lot of red-throated grebes nesting on Westchester Lagoon where we walk in the summer. You did really well here -- and I love the duck.
