I had such a cat and adopted a new young but mature Bombay. Bombays want to be alpha. Old cat was totally deaf and almost blind--had the house memorized.

Old cat drinks from water bowl. Young cat approaches from behind. HISSSSS, PHIT! Old cat has no clue. Young cat gets closer. HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, PHITTTTTT, PHITTTTTTTT!!!!! Still no reaction. Young cat goes away.

From that time on, the young cat would not share a room with the old cat. Would actually leave the room if the old cat limped into view.

Passive aggression carried to the ultimate, and it worked even if the old cat didn't know it.
