World Wide Moment: August 8, 2008
Here's something interesting I stumbled across on the Denver craigslist:

We are a project called World Wide Moment.
Our goal is to find people around the world to take a photograph at the exact same moment.
It's simply an artistic idea which we hope will allow people to have a moment of peace with people around the world.
It's happening 08.08.08@08:08+08hrGMT, which is August 7th @ 6:08PM in Denver and Mountain time.
Everyone's invited.
If you're interested email us and check out our website.
Thank you

We did something like this in the Photo Group years ago. It was called something like Sunset in DU Land. Each of us took a photo at sunset where ever we were on April 10, 2005. I couldn't find the actual thread, but I completely remember the project because my sunset shot was in a blizzard.

Anyway, I'm going to do this, and wondered if any of you Photo Groupies would also like to do it, and then we could post our photos in here. Anyone interested?

Here's a time zone converter to figure out your own time to participate: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

1. I remember the Sunset in DULand thread.

BRB going to see if I have it in my archives somewhere

edited to add:
dammit, I can't find it so I guess it is too old or I didn't book mark it properly. This was before we had journals so I couldn't save it to that.

About 40 of us participated I think so hopefully somebody has it. The person who co ordinated it arranged all the photos in order, east to west across the country.

I remember I was very disappointed in the sunset here because it was rather mundane; we often have spectacular sunsets. However I DID get some really nice bluebonnet photos as they were in full bloom..so I KNOW it was in March.

I found the thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=280&topic_id=2508 The bluebells must have been late that year. You'll have to scroll down to see photos, though it looks like most of them have been deleted by now. :(

This wasn't my sunset shot, which sucked because it was so dark out at sunset, but it is a photo I took that same day:

and the bluebonnets taken at same time

and you are right, this was at the end of the bluebonnet period that year, which makes sense since I was quite overjoyed to find this large patch of them.

they bloom late March through late April and as far North as we are they tend to peak around first week in April

and thought they had found heaven on earth.

Then the red wave and the yellow wave that follow (sorry don't have a photo of the red wave) would have pretty much convinced them

however right after the yellow wave comes summer which doesn't end until nearly Thanksgiving and then they knew they were really in hell.

edited to add: Thank you for the kind comment though.

6. Since the date is approaching,
I thought I'd pop this back up where we can see it.

I'm planning on participating - I'll post a thread here with my photo, in case anyone else is interested in sharing our little corner of World Wide Moment.

7. Neato!
I've set alarms on my cell phone at various times 24-hours prior to the event to be sure I have my camera with me AND I take a photo at the right time. :hi:

15. If someone else gets here before I do
Go ahead and start a thread - I got a last minute conference call scheduled, so it will likely be an hour or so after the "World Wide Moment" before I can post anything.

16. I won't be able to post until tomorrow.
I just moved and my new internet won't be set up until next Wednesday. So I'll have to take the shot tonight and bring it to work tomorrow to upload it. :)

10. This converter doesn't work for me.
Edited on Wed Aug-06-08 11:41 PM by Blue_In_AK
When I put 8/8/08 at 8 a.m. in the GMT spot and then tell it to convert it to Anchorage time, it says midnight between the 7th and the 8th. How could that be if your time comes out at 6:00 p.m. on the 7th. We're two hours ahead of you, so it should be 4:00 p.m. here. I don't understand how it's coming up with midnight.

ed. InTheFlow, when I use Denver on that converter I get 2:00 a.m. What am I doing wrong?

11. 4pm is correct
It confused me too so I just checked the FAQ. As far as I can tell, the event is occurring at 1:08am Aug 8 in London (not 8:08am GMT), which is 8:08pm Aug 7 in New York. That would, I believe correspond to 4:08pm Aug 7 in Anchorage.

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken. I'd hate to lead anyone astray.

13. If it's 8 p.m. in New York, it's 4 p.m. here
that's exactly right. Well, I like that a lot better than midnight. :)
