2. Thank you! It makes me happy, too. So does the photo you |
|
submitted, the water is glistening, real, and oh so cold. A beautiful winter experience. The photos that are coming in promise a vigorous contest, lots of fun.

Please stay with us. Don't put yourself in danger. God said not to. It so scares me. I dreamed about your photo, and got up in the middle of the night just to look at it again. Where are we. Chamonix?

28. It's COOL Mira, it's a red trail :D |
|
and it looks alot scarier than it really is...I had a worse black diamond on Tuesday than this trail ever will be...I fell 2X on this very steep, moguled, wet snow slope. Broke my ski pole (but fixed it). I never go off marked trails, I have a deathly fear of avalanches.
It is Ischgl, in Austria.

There has to be a story behind this. What mountain? Tell us what was going on. A lot of the appeal to the picture is the mystery--what is the story behind this picture? Did you stop at the base camp, or go on to the summit? I'm not particularly knowledgeable about mountain climbing, but I do know one thing-- you don't just drive up to a base camp and snap a picture.
I feel a bit that way about some of the other remote snowy pictures, too.
Honestly some of these pictures may deserve to win just because of the effort expended in getting the cameras to those locations.

7. What's the story behind "Coming Down Easy"? |

What happened, WannaJumpMyScooter? I'm guessing there was an accident. Do you know if they were ok?

Whoever submitted that one, I think it's cool of you to see something most people probably just walk past. I like the form on that one.

10. I'm thinking that End of the Line or Trail 10 could also qualify for the upcoming "Red" contest |
|
Unless, of course, I'm totally missing the point of the "Red" theme.
I don't think I've got any pictures of Emma Goldman or John Reed in my portfolio.

|
The "Open For Business" sign from last month's "Street Scenes". I am not sure why that one didn't make it into the finals. It would be a great RED picture.

13. Is it my lack of experience with the contests, or am I correct in thinking |
|
that the submissions for the Winter Photographs are knock me out gorgeous? Every one that shows up is another stellar contender. I did not quite feel that in the other contests. What a group of winners!

It is , of course, from the Minnesota archives. Winter here (in Arkansas) is not very photogenic in the contest sense.
It has its own Brown & Barren Beauty, but I really haven't yet been able to find a good way to photograph it that does it justice.
I prefer to enter something recent in our contests, but in this case, I had nothing, and no prospects of taking anything representative of Winter since we are already in early Spring.
This photo was taken at the frozen Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis in 2005 with an Olympus pocket camera (C-750 UZ).
Thamks for the kind words.

19. No, it's only 29...I screwed up... |
|
I changed my original photo after posting, but was too late to make the edit window...so I asked one of the mods to delete my original post, and reposted.
So...it's only 29...
My apologies to the group, and to kciN regnaD, for screwing things up for a shot that wasn't that great in the first place...

This is The Universe's way of telling me to quit screwing around on DU, and to get back to reading for my comps...

23. I retired 2 years ago, and went back to get my MA in History... |
|
I have really, really enjoyed it, and I recommend it to anyone thinking about going back.
I won't be finished til the end of the year. I have over 50 books on my reading list this semester, and about the same number next semester...which wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that the comps at the end will focus entirely on the historiography of the works involved.
It is turning this current experience into something of a drudgery. :(
Maybe I'll get into it more as the time passes...I should probably ask Skinner to lock me out until December.

25. True...and I am grateful for that... |
|
I just wish I had chosen thesis over comps at the moment; however, I would still have to critique my sources' historical method, and defend my own.
I think I'm just feeling unmotivated at a time when I need to be super-motivated.
I'll get right on it in the morning....

That photo is fantastic! :applause:
It totally reminds me of a trip I took down I-395 on the morning following an ice storm on the Madelaine Plains; crisp (20*F) clear blue sky, and as far as I could see the sagebrush was coated with white, glistening ice.
It was an incredible site I won't soon forget. No camera with me, unfortuneately... :(

29. Why thank you for saying so....it was the day after last months ice storm here in NY... |

all the tress were like sparkling jewels that the camera really didn't capture.
Indeed these gifts from nature are beautiful and not to be forgotten.
I keep a camera in my purse always.
