New telephoto lens
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 06:13 PM by 47of74
I was at the local Office Depot (which unfortunately is closing) and they had a Canon 75-300mm lens there for $150 which I decided to go ahead and get.

I took it down to the church I belong to (St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque, Iowa) in order to try it out. Here's an image of John the Baptist on the back of the sanctuary wall that I took with this lens.

The painting was done in the 1880s by Luigi Gregori. The painting has to be at least 50 feet up from the floor where I was standing and took the picture from. I never realized until I saw that image that the "Ecce Agnus" writing was on that painting, that's how close the lens got.

1. Nice! You got a good deal.
This particular lens doesn't have image stabilization (I don't think), so you'll probably get best results using a tripod, but you can't beat the price.

2. Bought the same one last year.

For the price it performs above reasonable, I think. And at your price its a good deal, for sure. (I am assuming its not the USM version?)

But as said; Given the focal length and lack of IS, a tripod or firm support is very much your friend, if you want to give it the best chance of delivering.

But it sure can be entertaining to get that sort of reach, if all one had before was <100mm.

3. Got one with the camera
Thanks. I got my EOS Kiss x2 (another name for the Rebel Xsi/450D) last year and one of the things that was included in the package I bought was a tripod. Which of course I completely forgot to take with me when I went to take these pictures. Next time I'll remember to take the tripod along.

Having a lens that does more than 100mm presents some interesting opportunities, to be sure.

4. I will find some of the shots I have with it when I get home.
Nothing really spectacular if I remember right. But there should be a few from Yosemite taken in Sept.

They have been exported from the raws and resized to 50% at max quality.
Flickr has resized them again to 1024 in width, though, because I don't have a pro account.

The EXIF data should be there too, if you wonder about the setting for the individual shots. The sharpness is a bit hampered by the slight mist in most of them. The waterfalls were from 3 to 4 kilometers away to give you a sense of the reach.

Actually just measured it. :)
Vernal Fall - 2600m away:

Nevada Fall - 3475m (give or take) away:

7. Yosemite is rather easy to take nice pictures of :)

I have a plan to get there when there is snow. But since it is not right around the corner from Copenhagen, Denmark it might have to wait a while. :)

Want to go to Yellowstone too. Or I did until I realised it was sitting on top of a gigantic volcano that is 40.000 years late on blowing up half of the US. :)
