June Flower Exhibition thread (for Gallery)
IF YOU DON’T WANT YOUR PHOTOGRAPH(S) MOVED TO THE DEMOPEDIA/GALLERY LINK THEN DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS THREAD.

There were way too many excellent Flower Photographs that won’t be seen in the contest. If you’d like to have your non-contest Flower Photograph (or photographs) featured with the Contest Photos as Exhibition Photographs in the Gallery then you can do one of three things.

1. Post the photograph(s) on this thread, or…
2. Respond to this Thread by putting “Yes” or “You bet” or “Sure….why not” in your subject line. Any response in the affirmative. Or…
3. You can PM me with either your photograph(s) and/or your permission.

If you use the second option (or PM me with your permission) I’ll try to find your non-contest photographs in the recent threads. If I can’t, then I’ll PM you so you can point me in the correct direction OR you can include the link in your “Yes” reply.

ANY OF THESE OPTIONS GIVES PERMISSION TO INCLUDE YOUR EXHIBITION PHOTOGRAPH(S) IN THE DEMOPEDIA AND/OR RELATED GALLERY LINK.

For those of you that require some legal mumbo-jumbo before you’ll agree to do this, here ya’ go…

Exhibition License: An entrant to this Exhibition Thread, by submitting a photograph and/or responding to this thread , is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia and/or to a linked Gallery that will display the photographs entered for this thread for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.

To date I only have my own and Ms Toad’s photographs. I’d like to have a few more. I’m doing this thread so I keep things all proper and get everyone’s permission to do this. This is also a chance for those of you that didn’t enter the Contest to post “what you would have submitted”.

I don't think I posted any alternates, though.

I wish I didn't have to do this crap but I don't know how else to do it. I could PM everyone but that could take quite awhile.

Edit: I think you had a Marigold or something? I'll have to look through the old threads......

3. You have my permission to re-host my photos in this forum anywhere
you wish, unless I explicitly deny re-hosting privileges when posting a photo.

It might be useful to gather up "general" permissions as well as any that might be limited to a specific theme or thread. Would save some duplication of effort for all of us.

14. Excellent Idea
It would be a pain in the arse and probabaly a bit annoying to everyone for me to do this on a monthly basis.

I'm already seeing a few "general permissions", so if anyone else would like to do it... please go for it.

Have been aware of looking for denials from anyone. I realize that some people may be using posted photographs for a purpose other than sharing here and that having those photographs in the gallery might detract from that purpose. Whatever it might be......

Thanks for the great suggestion.

29. I thought about entering my black and white images, but I
wanted to enter something that pushed the definition of a flower picture. I found the texture of the leaves more interesting than the bud. But then there is something oddly sexual about the bud. There's also a repulsive element to the bud.

8. Absolutely you can post mine.
Anyone can take any image offline & try to pass it off on their own, it doesn't have to appear in a gallery. If it becomes famous, I'll sue them since I have the negatives (or the series, in the case of the digital print) to back up my claim in court. I won't worry about until then.

"Purple Haze - Lupines return to Mt St Helens"

A foggy day, just starting back down from end of the road, and the way the light and fog diffused the color of the lupines to the ash itself caught my eye.

25. I've learned a lot from photos posted here
The "staircase" photo in the previous contest -- by superconnected? -- stunned me because I have climbed it on several occasions (car being resuscitated) and never even really began to even start to look at it that way.

By the way, did I ever tell the story about my first experience of Afghan hashish? Well, after getting dumped off by the minivan that served as the only possible ground transport from Iran, the immigration office was closed for the night but the cafe across the road was open. I walked in with my (un-burhka'd female - they were more tolerant then) companion and was approached by a guy who offered me a palm-sized disc of what I understood (somehow, through a lot of gestures and a very few common words like ganja) to be hashish bonded with opium in exchange for a US dollar. Went back to the tent I had set up in the middle of the (rather barren) planting strip between the two traffic lanes and spent the night somewhere (altogether) elsewhere. Gave me real meaning for the phrase "far out."

37. It was the "purple haze" phrase and the current news of Afghanistan
that sent me on that tangent. That said, it was there that I first really learned that the most "foreign" place and culture I had ever experienced was made up of people just like me, even better than me. I was as alien a visitor as many there had ever seen, yet I felt no hostility or danger. Well, a little danger when I was followed through Kandahar by a guy with a rifle (everyone had one, but being followed was odd), at least until he finally confronted me with an offer to sell it. Like most in that era it was actually a flintlock-type single shot and very ornate -- ahh, for the good old days.

And later, in Peshawar, Pakistan, I had the good fortune to hear the views about right and wrong held by a young Afghan who, as an aftermath of being orphaned in a raid by a rival clan, had received an education in England and was returning home. Not killing those who killed his family, given the chance, was simply unthinkable for him. A fine, honorable, throughly decent young man with a set of deeply held values that explained better than anything why the US occupation is doomed.

Oh, and back to photography, here's a good starting point: http://www.afghana.com/Photographs/Photos.htm

41. Thanks for the link...
I know this may sound weird, but Afghanistan was always one of those places I wanted to visit, even before it became "famous." I think the Afghani people are so interesting, strong and beautiful. I guess I may not ever get to go there the way things are now, but I certainly appreciate seeing the pictures. Thanks. :)

48. I see that the link to one of the best galleries is broken. Try this -
http://www.lukepowell.com/
The guy's been visiting since the mid-Seventies and although the pics are a bit small, his skill is apparent and his comments are very enlightening.

It seems a lot of those links are broken, and I still haven't found a site I once saw with really fantastic landscapes, but this site has a pretty good collection of pictures - from "the good old days" when it was merely medieval/tribal, before the CIA decided that fostering and training fanatical fundies would be good for corporatism, and the narrative regarding the "hippie trail" experience is very familiar: http://www.canajun.com/rmcguire/travel/asia/afghanistan/

50. Thank you so much, Cons.
The photos in the Luke Powell collection are great. I don't know why it is that I have such an attraction to that area and people, but I do. I've saved these links so I can check them out more when I have more time. It's probably as close as I'll ever get to Afghanistan, I suspect.

I was going to suggest that you put a border around "White" since it gets lost against the white of the DU page. Looks a hair better against a black background. But I didn't suggest that. And this post will self destruct in five minutes.

30. I had thought about
adding a border a few times but it was too late to edit the post. Then I remembered I don't have too, just change the picture in photobucket. It does help separate it with a border so done.

BTW the look best with a mat...my mom loved the picture so I took 3 of the shots, each at a slightly different angel and printed them as 5x7s. I then matted them in a row in one frame for a b-day present for her. Matting looks best around it.

BTW: I took your lens recommendation and went for it. I've been impressed with the macro (as seen in your fantastic photographs) and the great image quality. It's a little slow to focus but I like the instant manual focus override. (the 100/macro)

That was about as close to a perfect photo of the Skagit tulip fields as I could imagine.

(I'll go further -- after seeing that, I've decided I'm never going to try to photograph the tulip fields up there, because any picture I could take of them would either be a) grossly inferior, or b) merely a rip-off of that one.)
