I wanted a cheap, fun, lightweight camera to take on holidays with me. Something offbeat and a bit silly. After much deliberation, I picked up
the Lomo action sampler 4-shot camera which has 4 lenses that fire in sequence, each exposing 1/4 of the film and recording the action as it happens
(
Example at Amazon link). At least, that's the theory. Reality is something else. Instead of 4 shots per frame, I get this:
3 of the 4 lenses only fire while the film is being wound on (about halfway) and the 4th one is the only one triggered by the shutter release. Sometimes
one of them gets stuck open, so I've been carrying it around with my hand over the lenses between shots to keep it as dark as possible. It's also possible
to hold down the button while winding on and it will keep firing until the film runs out. This is my first roll of film, so it's a work in progress as I get
the hang of it. Obviously, it's defective and I should probably send it back.
On the other hand, I also get shots like these:
I've always been fascinated by accidental multiple exposures. One of the other cameras I wanted actually does double exposures, but I couldn't find it
for sale locally and didn't want to pay shipping equal to the cost of the camera (!!). Instead, I "settled" for this one and thought maybe I could do something
post-production, like overlaying the shots to get a multiple exposure effect. Strangely, I got a "defective" camera that does exactly what I want.
Sometimes the universe is a very, very odd place.
What do you think?
