I need a new tripod
The one I have is whimpy and flimsy.

I would appreciate some feedback for type of settings, or features you feel are very useful so I can narrow down my search just a little. There are MILLIONS (seems like) to choose from. TIA

1. Tripods...
Well, yes, but... there are millions of different things to do with tripods, so knowing what you want to use if for in particular is necessary.

How big a camera, and how big are the biggest lenses? Do you pack pack, how old are you (or how sturdy are you!). Do you do photomacrography? Is it necessary for this tripod to support a camera very close to the ground?

Actually, does the tripod need to supply a stable platform, or is it just going to be an extra hand to hold the camera? That's a very expensive difference because a relatively inexpensive tripod will hold the camera just a well as you can, but never gets tired. If you want one that will not shake a little with a 600mm lens on it, or be stable with a 180mm macro lens shooting something at 1:1 magnification... there is no point in thinking about an inexpensive tripod, unless it is too heavy to carry! A stable tripod is either heavy, expensive or both.

Hmmmm... here's a very good article by Thom Hogan that's well worth serious study:

I'm old enough that when I start falling I can't jog a step or two , I simply fall in a stiff legged clatter. I need the tripod to help steady my hand. When I zoom into digital mode 80x, every tiny shake compromises the picture. I don't have a huge camera Canon SX10IS. I'll check out the article, thanks.
There is enough blurr when I try close in shots too that I am getting frustrated.
