The school bus color matches the side of the overpass, not to mention the signs, and the predominant color of the trees...........

Also cool that the front of the bus shows the movement more than the back.

What an interesting shot!

4. Wiser heads than mine might know, but I think the motion at the front

seems more pronounced because that part of the photo is a little brighter and closer than the rest...?

I think the leaden overcast helped to damp the colors down into a pretty narrow range. IIRC, I shot this during "the hunt for wabi sabi" because of the rust on the overpass.

I did try a black & white, but it was completely uncompelling.

6. Boring trigonometry explanation

I don't think I qualify as wiser but here's my explanation of why the motion is more pronounced. Warning: boring trigonometry talk ahead.

It all pretty much boils down to the angles involved. Portions of the scene being shot are focused on a small section of the sensor. Examine the diagram below:



Imagine the black line as the side of the bus and the black dot the camera. Now imagine that the two arcs reduce down to a single pixel on the sensor. The two arcs encompass the same angle. You'll note that the two arcs contain different lengths of the black line. The green and purple dots are used for reference. The green dots represent the start points. The shutter opens with the "bus" at the green dot location. While the shutter is open, the "bus" moves so that the green dots are now at the purple dot position. The top dot is still within the arc so relative to the pixel it's influencing, it essentially hasn't moved. The bottom dot has moved outside the arc so now it has influenced 2 or more pixels, resulting in motion blur.

My apologies if the explanation isn't worded well. Hopefully, the diagram will make up it.

The reason we notice it in the bus more than we would in a car is because it's longer.

In any case, I really love this photo for its color as well as its trigonometry.
