Snow on the Magnolias
WannaJump sent it my way
The snow today caught me completely by surprise.
Out of milk, out of bread, and there is nothing that can be done about that.

In the South, at the first hint of an announcement about impending snow everything slows to a crawl and then a stop.
Everything is closed, canceled, in a supermarket - before it starts - you cannot find a cart, a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread. All gone until the "danger" is over.

Here are a few from around my house and neighborhood.

1. Good job!
I love every single one of these. Snow and Christmas are supposed to go together so those with the wreath stand out. But the footsteps and tracks in the snow--love that. And you actually captured a person trying to brave the elements (like you).

I am very impressed with the extent of the snow.

3. Do you have magnolias?
Nice shots, HarveyDarkey, and lots of snow. If we have that much snow, school is out for a month.

6. no Magnolias
although there were when I worked in 'Nawlins several years back. There was one dusting of about 1/4" during the time I lived there.

Everything shut down.

5. That's a dusting. Real snow makes it so ya can't open the doors of your house to get out, so you
hafta go out through the window and "swim" across your lawn, praying that ya don't suffocate along the way. :P

(Seriously, though, looks like you have some nice sledding snow there. I am not sure we'll have enough by Xmas break for the kids to go out and do much here. :( When I was a kid winter snow started in November. It's been pushed back by a month for years now.)

12. Reminds me of winter in Park City
I was visitng a friend who was out of milk. We decided to walk to the 7-11 and cut across a field to get to the store...staying far far away from cars (warm weather tourists) attmepting to drive lol. Anyway 1/2 way across the field, I fell through the hard crust that had formed on the surface of the snow. The snow was hip deep.

We thought that since we had gone this far, surely there would be more crusty surface to support our weight. No such luck. Each time we climbed out and took another step we sank back down to our hips. Actually it was all quite funny and we laugh so hard and it was so cold it felt like our tears froze as they fell from our eyes.

I learned 2 things that day. (1) It's makes all sorts of sense that Moose have such long legs and (2) if you lay down and spread out the weight over a greater surface area you can roll to where you want to go. I didn't feel like drinking the milk after that.

13. LOL Walking in snow is one of the best heart pumping workouts I can think of. I've
fallen through to mid-thigh level but hubby has fallen in as deep as you have when he was out taking winter photos.

14. What a fun story. Especially lesson learned number One.
I'm glad I helped you remember it.
Having grown up in Germany, I am well familiar with deep snow. But I forgot.
And that's actually a good thing, as I see it.

8. We get it about once or twice a winter. Never all that much, and after a day or
so it's usually gone. Some winters it never snows. But we always have at least one ice storm, which can decimate our trees.
You missed seeing this:

9. For future reference...
dried milk is nice to have on hand. I keep Organic Valley around, although I'm in NYC and except for a day of plowing, no one who is able-bodied is really shut in. The front of my building has a 4 step stoop and there's a requirement that every building clear its sidewalk within 4 hours of the end of the snowfall (or 6am, if the snow ends in the middle of the night).

10. I like these very much
especially the tire tracks and the first one, where the person gingerly stepping into the street in the distance just makes the shot. Great work.

11. It looks chilly there
It's supposed to snow here this weekend. So far, we've only had a light dusting that melted overnight.

I like the footprints and tracks in the snow. It reminds me of the Abbey Rd pictures for some reason, after they've crossed of course.
