First day of the decade
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 09:57 PM by qnr
Some photographs taken early in the morning at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge
Blue Moon sets at sunrise

Birdies!

Some Black and Turkey Vultures as seen from the Observation Tower

Kitty

A bobcat on the Heron Flats Trail - these were shot in low-light, handheld at 1000mm, so they're not as sharp as I'd like.

Strolling along

Another view of the bobcat - these were shot in low-light, handheld at 1000mm, so they're not as sharp as I'd like.

2. I can imagine. I vaguely remember an acquaintance of mine saying he had one,
many years ago, never met it though.

Thanks - decided to head out there early, which must be why I lucked out and caught the bobcat.

3. Nice photos, but...
...the "first day of the decade" will be January 1, 2011.

4. Yeah, I know, I've spent many hours explaining the concept of year 1 to people,
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 11:10 PM by qnr
It's just a matter of convenience, since so many look at it that way. Though, in truth, decades are also counted from 0's, since they start counting them at the beginning of centuries - meaning 00, rather than year 1.

Edit: Sounds contradictory, but what the heck - I've done the research and many experts agree with the concept. Me, I just type the words :)

6. Thanks! Wish the refuge wasn't quite so far away. My car is falling apart, and
it would be quite a trip on a 50cc scooter (about 140 miles round trip - or 246 if I take the "avoid highways" route).

8. Are bobcats kind of like lynx?
If so, you were very lucky to get these shots. We have lynx up here, but I've only seen one, and, of course, had the wrong lens on the camera at the time. They're such beautiful animals.

I really like your shots. The second one is great in black and white. Very moody.

9. Actually, it is a Lynx, it's the smallest member of the four Lynx types. Thanks - yeah,
that observation tower was nice. I had a black vulture land not four feet away from me and watch curiously as I was changing my lens. Unfortunately, it left by the time I had switched back to a lens suitable enough for a close-up.

11. I just hate it when that happens.
When we saw our lynx standing right in the middle of the road in front of us, I had the wide-angle lens on. By the time I switched to the telephoto, he was off in the trees. That has also happened with brown bears we've seen down by the Kenai River. I think that's why my husband bought me a second camera so I could always be prepared.

13. Yeah, I hate that. I used to carry two, but I traded the two of them in to buy a
different model (used - fixed income sucks :) )
