And there have been rare times when I was forced to vote for someone other than me, even in my own preliminary thread. We are all in our own ways (you and me included) dedicated and awesome photographers.

I love what can be done with flashlights and other impromptu lighting. For my "shot in the dark shot in the dark" photo (the one with the shot glass), I used a small flashlight and a paper cylinder taped to the end to get a spotlight effect. I'm still working on my shot for this contest but I expect that in the unlikely case your entry sinks like a stone, mine will already be there waiting for you.

42. I second your observation, |
|
which includes your fascinating photo.
I get the feeling that this subject has intrigued us to stretch into new dimensions. I had four ideas, and took easily 30-40 shots of each, and finally just DECIDED on one. It could have eaten my time alive, and almost did. I had a great deal of fun, and learned a few things about lighting, and over doing, and under doing, and sharpness, and saturation..................
Though I could not say exactly what I learned, I think it will add to my store house of unconscious competence, that sometimes rears its useful head.
(there is no way I could describe how much fun this is, and no way I want to remember the time before I found you guys)

I think still life is probably as challenging for some as a portrait would be for me. I've got a gazillion floral and other still lifes and not one formal portrait.
But the beauty of these challenges is that they force you to stretch yourself and think outside your comfort zone. And that's a good thing for any artist to do.

This place is a wonderful motivator. We are kind to each other, and are encouraging, and if asked will give further opinions.
We think we are the best forum on DU :). I love having you here.
I miss the smell of the chemicals as well. But I do not miss the cost of photography of the old days. I'll be looking for your contributions, and I'm really happy you found us.

71. I don't miss the cost either. |

I spent a fortune in paper. I had one photograph that was a white wedding dress with black boots....and as I'm sure you know, true black and white like that is the HARDEST to get printed so that there is detail in both the black and white. I think I printed that sucker 50 times. I was in the dark room until I was exhausted, but I finally got it the way I wanted it. I wonder just how much that silly photo cost me by the time it was all done. Fiber paper and all of the chemicals...hard to tell what it cost. It got an award at the college art show so it was worth it. I miss my classes, too.

should turn in. I think what we see in this one is like I said before an attempt at the proverbial stretch. The stretch, once achieved, will never let us go back to the original dimension.
I think the reason the photos came in so slowly is not just intimidation, but also an attempt to arrange and do our individual best to match the quality of what is presented. These are, as I'm observing, photos we are slaving over to get right.
I know I did. And I failed to the point of wanting a new camera. (blame something outside yourself :))
What you are saying, I bet, is that you are recognizing that you are called on to do the best you are able to at this time. And your peers are doing the calling.
Cheerio.
If I had managed a photo that might win, and if I did, I honestly would call for a second round of still life. Because I'm watching a struggle to learn and be creative in action, and the watching is lots of fun.

It does feels like each contest stretches me further and I'm definitely not quite the same shape afterward. This one got to me more than usual because it's so far from my usual style. And yes, there came a point when the nit-picking had to stop and the submission made even though it wasn't quite right yet. I'm glad I did it. It's fun trying something new and even more fun to share the experience with everyone here.

79. Constant intimidation |
|
I don't know if I'm more intimidated by this one than any others. I'm always intimidated by the fabulous entries. I don't think there's been a single one where I've felt anywhere close to confident. I just figure that if I chicken out due to the amazing entries, I'll probably use the same excuse the next time. And the next. And I must say that your second place finish in the Winter contest should be proof enough that your entries are always among the amazing submissions.

:grr: I have things I could post, but I worked so freakin' hard on the ones stuck on my card.
Ah, just as well. The competition is something fierce this time around!

I like your elephant photo. Is it just me, or are the contests getting harder every time?

86. No, the elephant was an early run. |
|
So dissatisfying to me I painstakingly set my kitchen for some lovely still lifes with citrus and flowers. They're still on my card. *sigh* But thank you for the compliment anyway! :hi: I agree these contests are getting mad-hard these days!

88. When I saw Elephant Spirit and Pepper Quail |
|
What came to mind as an idea was a fusion of the two:
An Elephant made of eggplants, titled Baba Ganesh.
I like both of these pictures.

89. Can you copy directly onto the computer? |
|
If you plug a USB cable into the camera and then the computer, you should be able to copy and paste the pictures directly. That's how I do it. No downloaders necessary.

it's not a standard size. I'm sure this camera came with a cable that performed just that function. But I got this the year I lived in Mississippi after Katrina. I lost track of a lot of things that year. I'm guessing that cable was just another lost thing.

You should be able to get a replacement cable on ebay or somewhere if you can't get the downloader to work. Do you have a camera store nearby that you could ask? They might be able to help fix it or get you a cable.

I can only guess at what you're talking about :)
I always thought it would make a great band name - and since I'm not a musician, I have to settle for using as a screen name.

I love your name. And also your photo. I do not host this contest, and the hostess is not around right now. I think though it does not qualify for the theme of "Still life".
We decided after the theme of the February contest was voted on that Still Life meant recognizable object are arranged in a way to please the photographer.
The hostess may decide otherwise, but if I were she I would say hold it for another contest where it may be "macro" shots, or something else it would more fit into.
Hey, you had an hour or so to find something. We have been struggling for close to a couple of weeks. I'm so pleased you showed up with a beautiful photo.
Poke around our forum, see who we are (the nicest damn people imaginable) and how we do things. We have a contest every month.
