I think polling GD, as I said, needs a visual like you're giving, (MAN I love them in the bigger formats)
but not in increments like you did for us.
Repeating myself:
I think we should do one in only larger photos and tell them it's different and that we want their opinion on that issue.

7. Excellent idea.

One contest with larger dimensions and a solicitation for feedback would be a very smart way to pursue this further, unless the existing limits remain. I actually prefer to leave the limits as they stand, but I hope we can get a clear consensus on this and other things that crop up from time to time. If the consensus is bigger, I'd be delighted with that too.

2. I'm actually surprised at how much better I liked 800 vs 900 pixels

I thought I would think "yeah, bigger is better, but we should not go larger than we currently allow due to the problem of vertical formated pics".

But on my screen, 900 pixels starts to get too close to the browser crap and detracts from the image- even though I see the entire image at once just fine.


The ideal would be for every entry to get it's own 1K X 1K black (or dark grey) field, and the photographer could float their image within that field as they so chose. But that's adding a complexity that we probably don't need; people would be asking how to create such a field etc etc.

but it was something to the effect of stipulating less than 800 pixels on the long side for photos in portrait orientation.

12. I have to scroll too but it's not a big deal

btw the Windows F11 shortcut mentioned in a previous post doesn't work on newer macs unless you reconfigure the keyboard. Not sure how much of a problem that would be for the average contest voter but it's yet another hurdle to consider if we're going to include instructions on how to view larger pictures.

I would be all for a larger format, except...

1. vertical pictures already get cut off. A large format means more scrolling to see the full picture.
2. for a couple months a year, I'm often relegated to dial-up.

very distracting. I suppose I could always turn my screen 90 degrees so it is not in 'landscape' orientation. So I'd vote for 800 Pixels on the longest side so I don't have to flip my monitor 90 degrees.

18. IF we are to increase the size limit, it should be to 1024...

Why? Because most web-sharpening tools I know of are optimized for 480, 640, 800, and 1024 pixels on the longest dimension -- anything between them will be compromised visually.

Personally, I don't think we should go beyond 800 pixels, but, if we do, it should be to 1024 rather than 900 or 1000.
