Never tried this. Any thoughts from those who have or might consider it?

On edit, only Canon & Nikon, so I guess I won't be indulging.

1. I used a lot of rental gear in the 80's and 90's.

It is a great way to gear up for specific jobs. Most people can't afford to buy everything they need for every situation. If you are going to do a lot of it you should get insurance. I dropped a lens while shooting an event once.

I would rather do business with a local vendor. I would like to know that the lens coating isn't damaged before I take it. I have rejected equipment from reputable vendors before.

As an amateur I do not absolutely need professional grade ultra fast and sharp lenses. I don't have to impress anyone but myself. I would rather save my money and buy lower quality gear that is always with me. If quality is critical high quality primes are not usually that expensive.

I have never seen a rental house willing to mess with anything other than Nikon and Canon for small format. 100% of their business is professional and nobody is going to show up to a job with anything else.

2. There are a number that carry 4/3 - I like

http://www.lensrentals.com - I'm renting this lens for some work, and to photograph a protest I'm attending in Austin on the 16th, protesting the changes to the Texas curriculum.

Edit: I absolutely agree about the insurance, pay a tiny bit more and keep yourself protected.

3. Thanks for that link
I wasn't aware of places that rented lenses. Their prices seem (I guess) reasonable. I think I may try out that 50mm. f2.0 macro lens before I consider buying. There are a couple of others also, particularly the Bigma.

4. My pleasure. Yes, their prices are reasonable, since they buy all of their lenses
new, and only rent them for set periods. Also, don't know if you've looked around, but they rent more than lenses (camera bodies, lighting, support, etc.).
