26 Glacier Cruise
We went on a glacier cruise in Prince William Sound today courtesy of our stockbroker (customer appreciation day). The weather was dark and stormy (rather like my mood these days), but I did get some pretty good shots. Here are just a few. Maybe I'll finally take F. up on the Smugmug thing and post a bunch of them over there. Anyway, I hope you enjoy...

I know this looks like the moon, but it's really the sun
trying really hard, but not quite making it....

1. I've only seen one glacier up close...
The colors are just amazing.

Do join the party over at smugmug. It's lots of fun!

I do need a party, that's for sure.

ed. About the color, I think it's even more striking when the skies are so gray. Then you KNOW it's not reflecting off the blue sky.

3. We did the Inside Passage/Glacier Bay trip in August '96...
...and it was overcast the whole time, too (although not so dark as in your pics). The glaciers really are that blue. Everyone kept saying that it was actually a good thing that it wasn't sunny, since you can't make out the color of the glaciers under bright sunlight.

I got some good photos of icebergs calving on that trip. Unfortunately, I was shooting film :wow: , so can't share them until I can manage to scan the negatives.

4. Wonderful, moody photos...
If I hadn't seen glaciers under clouds myself, I would swear that the third one was taken to monochrome everywhere but at the glacier and its reflection in the water.

The last one almost looks like a setting for a Norwegian folk tale.

5. That's what I like about them, too...
All of the glacier pictures I took are really just studies in gray, black and white, and then that incredible blue. It's just so striking. I took a bunch (!) of pictures ... I'll probably be putting a series of them on SmugMug for anyone who's interested.

6. Having never seen a glacier at the ocean
I can't comment on the lighting. All very nice though. Too bad you didn't have the first for the reflections contest.

7. I did the best I could with the lighting...
It was a very dark and stormy day.

8. Nice!
I think the most uniformly disappointing photos I've taken were on such a glacier oriented cruise under heavy overcast lighting. The views were great, but the pics very flat.

Here's a shot from the trail up the north side of the Mendenhall Glacier outside Juneau.

9. Wow, you were right up on it!
I love Mendenhall Glacier. I haven't been down there in years, but that whole area is SO beautiful. Did you like Juneau? I think it's kind of a cool little town -- an odd place for the capital, but still a cool place to visit.

10. I loved Juneau,
except for the prospect of 9 months of winter. A small town, essentially, with a fragment dedicated to picking the pockets of tourists and another dealing with payola from the feds, but most folks just living their lives.

Here's a night view:

11. That's gorgeous...
I always get kind of a little San Francisco feel from Juneau, something about the hills, maybe. I think people are fairly liberal down there, too. If I didn't live in Anchorage, I'd probably want to live there.
