This is the one time I didn't even follow the finals after casting my vote when they first went up. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing the winners thread on the main page.
I don't want to question the judgment of the voters in GD, but I have no doubt in my mind that ManiacJoe's entry was much better than mine -- as far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't even have been a contest. I'm just glad that jethro_tull gave it the Host's Award, and concur 100% with his analysis of the image -- it was the class of the contest this month.

2. I am not sure that mine was MUCH better. :-) |

The two shots are very different, making the comparison harder. Where mine goes with the shallow DoF for that impressionistic feel, yours has that large-landscape-all-in-focus feel. Given the contest rules for size I was able to crop the original substantially. I might have cropped yours a little differently (less sky maybe). I have a few that resemble your pic, but they did not turn out quite as nice.

ManiacJoe, don't sell yourself short at all. Your entry is gorgeous!
My choices came in third and fifth.
I love those lanterns and all the colors at work throughout the photo. Reminds me of a watercolor. Capn has graciously agreed to share more from the same trip where this one was taken as soon as he has some time. I love forward to seeing them.
And Alfredo has the most wonderful portraits! I love this photo! The expression on the middle child is perfect!
GPV, you ran this contest flawlessly. Great job!
:hi:
