Rainy fall day in the coastal redwoods
We spent a rainy weekend in Ft. Bragg, on the Mendocino coast--I have family there. It never once stopped raining. The wind wasn't bad, it wasn't too stormy. But the rain didn't make for great photography.

We don't get much in the way of fall leaves changing color around here. There's some color to some of the trees, yes, but it doesn't compare to what one can see in the Midwest and Northeast. So I was kind of happy to see that all the rain had caused the dead redwood needles to fall onto the surface of the road. You can't really see the dead needles while they're still in the tree--they're far outnumbered by the green needles. So it was kind of a lark that the fall colors were deposited on the road, and not otherwise terribly visible. I'll take what I can get.

I only had time to take one shot. Lots of rain was falling onto my non-weatherproofed camera despite my trying to cover it with a hat while it sat on a tripod. Here's how it turned out.

2. You could take thirty or more and not get one wonderful shot like this!
A treat. Very unusual. I can imagine the size of the trees.

3. nice picture
I fell in love with the redwood forests when there... a place that Everyone should visit at least once! I was just in Vermont today and the colors are awesome in the Northeast but the redwoods are AWESOME!

6. I come back and look at it - a number of times now.
I like every single thing about it. Including the sizing of it. It is perfect.

8. Wow
That's gorgeous. Depth and layers. I love how the left side looks as if it is pushing against the tree barrier...two realities colliding.

9. Wow. Thanks everyone.
It's really nice to see the positive comments about the picture. I guess that in my mind's eye, I have this conception that when I take a good picture, I'll know it, I'll say 'that's the one'. This was not the case here at all. I saw the potential in the shot. But because of the steady rain (whose drops are not visible due to the long exposure time), I was more worried about my camera gear than any creative considerations. So this is really valuable to me--maybe I can use it to partially reverse-engineer what I think of as a "good shot". Thanks again, everyone.
