6. I voted for the concept of the third one just now
although I think the focus & detail of the first two are better.

2. love love love the play of lights
and shadows in #1. Ultimately voted for the whimsy of the thread in the eye of the needle. I think technically #1 is better, but #3 has a draw for the set up.

4. Thank you, Sheepshank.
Could change the name to 'Let it Sew' (let it sew, let it sew)

:)

5. I voted without comment - but want you to know - that I voted for 3.
It has white / has action / and room to think about what you're looking at. I like it a lot.
The others are very fine photos, but lack the emotion of number 3.

I'm glad to see you are having fun, are experimenting, and are sharing.

I'm doing to white what I did to black...shooting all over the place. :)

7. I'm partial to #2, but they all have their draw. I think I would go with #3...
if it had just a touch more light on the needle.

I'll work on that! I'm partial to the stacked spools myself.

Here's one with needle and stack.

10. I like the third one
on the first set though it could be sharper and I like this one and the way the needle is in the first roll, plus the color is so much better. :) I love your idea but feel there is something missing. So a few suggestions to try if you are up to it.

Could you find a white or off white material to place everything on and use lighting to separate the props from the back ground? A small fold or rough edge might be good too. The black and white contrast does bring out the thread but with the theme being white it might be worth trying.
Could you lay the front thread on its side on front of the other two? Also pull the thread through a bit further too. You might have to try different arrangements. The spool on its side is more dynamic.

Hope you don't mind the added musing on placement etc. but you have so much you can do with your great idea it is hard not to throw stuff out there. At least for me. Oh and play with different f-stops, that can be fun in itself.

If you look here http://pixelphoto.smugmug.com/Flowers/Flowers/1497531_i2aw6#96355896_x4BUb numbers 3 and 8 would of never worked as well on a black or dark background while on 11 black made it better. YMMV

Now to walk the dogs that have patiently howled while waiting for me.

11. Thanks!! Much appreciated!!
I've been re-arranging the stacks but will now add other elements of white (background) and play around with that.

Thank you very much!!!

Brrr it's too cold out. As I walked I thought about what I felt was missing. A story. lol With some material and light to white sewing stuff with the thread your picture would lend itself to a story for each viewer.

It is good practice to try lighting with white on white and black on black. Also with shiny and clear items. It helps you learn what the camera really sees instead of what your eyes see. The brain has a way of filtering things.

13. It's how I learn. Thank you! Truly. I've been adding more elements
...working on that 'story' and also taking other photos - we got a good bit of snow during the night.

15. Wow the second one
is a winner in this group. I think part of it is the lighting is good. You do know you pick something shiny (thread) that is hard to light. What are you using to light it all?
I'll check in here and there but do have to act like I am working in between.:) I do like the lighter background though.

16. I like the light background better. Thank you for the suggestion!!!
I'm using a strong overhead light...it's a ceiling light with everything set up directly beneath and I'm shooting off at an angle.

Thank you for everything!! You've been a lot of help!!

17. Have any old
white sheets. You could take 1 and use clothes pins to clip it between the light and your props. (props=easier to type) That would help diffuse the light and take so of the hot areas away. You can also use white paper or aluminum foil to bounce some light in from the sides. But that second one is there and needs no more work if you are tired of playing with it. You can always keep the homemade diffuser and reflector ideas for next time.
