Does this "say" unity?
Be honest. I'm tryin' to get a grasp on this theme. I think it does but I may be waaaaaaay off. What.Say.You? Took this with my trusty Nikon Coolpix 950 awhile back as the sun was setting. I like how both the statue (two united) blends in (unites) with the architecture. But maybe I just "see" things differently.

Thanks for lookin' and commenting.

1. I think so - but then I thought a vise and chain represented strength.
What do I know.

2. Chain and vise represented strength, for sure.
But there's no accounting for public taste! :silly:

5. Your entry had "strength" written all over it

I'm going to bring up a point here about prior contests/challenges and Lounge Voting.

Of all 11 prior contests/challenges every winning photo with the exception of one (maybe two) have been Nature/Landscape snaps... regardless of the theme.

The Lounge loves nature/landscape stuff.

10. I also liked the vice & chain.
I thought it was one of the closest to the essence of the theme "Strength". I liked the older "working man's" vice, chain and background. If I had voted according to "loyalty" to theme, it would have been a toss up between your pic and Rhino. Both of these pictures said "STRONG" to me.

3. Sure.
I can see how this would fit the category. But I can also see how you'd question it as an entry. I don't think the unity theme jumps out mixing the architecture and the sculpture; it's not a connection I would expect the Lounge Lizards to make intuitively.

But what do I know? I'm totally stumped and probably won't enter anything if unity turns out to be the theme.

4. Fir Reel?

:bummer:

I'm strugglin, as you can tell, but I'll throw something in if Unity is the theme. Maybe the statue snap above just to confuse the Lounge Lizards.

I see unity in a pure abstract form as being repetition. In a social representation... the photo that Blue' posted, wedding shots, etc.... And in Nature; earth, plants, water, and sky combined (in unity). Unity as an Art Reference is all about the different parts of a work of art that unite to create one image.

Unity is an excellent theme. Very challenging. I do have an idea for something I could shoot in my basement photo dungeon but it will be a little.... "different" and will be completely lost on the Lounge Lizards. But then... do I want to spend 2-3 hours setting up and processing a snap that will only be appreciated by myself and maybe a couple of others? I know it won't be a vote magnet.

6. Your.Brain.Hurt.
That's probably because you were totally insomniac-ing last night. ("Insomniac-ing?" I say, the fun of English is verbifying nouns! :)) (And how do I know you were insomniac-ig? Because I was too, last night, and saw your posts right before I went to bed. :P)

It's interesting to me that you see unity as repetition. I can't the word "balance" out of my head when I think of "unity." Here's my first attempt lame shot at Unity, based on my balance obsession. But I doubt the Lizards (or anyone else) would get the Taoism/Balance/Unity connection I've got going in my own hurting brain:

7. Rest easy, you guys
I think the autumn theme is going to win the poll. But I do see unity in both of your posted photos, and, yes, I was thinking unity in a very broad sense. It was more of a mental challenge than anything. I agree with you on the lounge and landscapes. Maybe we should do a contest some month where ANY landscape is excluded just to see if their heads explode over there.

9. But then you would have to exclude cute
pets and kids because they too would draw away from others. I would say the lounge goes with what makes them feel good, and what they are used to. There is a reason post cards are mostly landscapes and most other cards are landscapes, cute kids or cute animals. Besides some people just don't want to think about why, how and what, they just want pretty. Why else would two little bluebirds in a birdbath win over Seeing myself and the others? It was some rough times and they just wanted a cute and feel good pic.

And I see unity in both pics, but then I was the one that started making brains hurt with strength.

14. Well you do have the few that do
look at them as we do. And I look at the contest as a way to challenge ourselves and get to see others photos. Without votes there would be less of both. Besides there is nothing wrong with pretty pictures either. Its worth it even if you are the one running it. Besides look at how much you have pushed people into doing with out even trying to push them.

On the light thing, I'll try to get the pic that taught me finally and explain it but after I get home from the caves, I mean work.

8. I think both photos say unity
and are pretty different from my take on it lol.

I like the idea of excluding lanscapes in the lounge contest one time. Their heads probably would explode lol.

11. Beautiful
It says "unity" to me, and so much more.

It works for me on several levels for "unity". I wouldn't hesitate to enter it. But don't take my word for it. I'm curious to see what else you will come up with.
I haven't had my first real idea yet for "unity".

Do you remember your settings for this shot. It is remarkably soft for cold hard marble.

12. Exif.....
Nikon 950. Focal Length: 9mm (27mm film eq??), No Flash, ISO-80, f/2.9, 1/84 sec exposure.

I think the light had more to do with the snap than I did. It was one of those lucky moments when the available light just did its thing. Instead of "waiting for the light" as suggested by CC I usually "trip over the light".

Glad ya like it. It's one of my faves.
