KOEB 2/5/08 Super Duper Mega Humongous Big Fat Tuesday Edition

Keith has been here since 6. I have only been able to tune in recently, and I'm furious. My building chose today to demand that we all unplug our appliances for the day because it was shutting down the electrical system for hours to install some new "amenity" it won't tell us about, which meant I couldn't set to record and would have to start whenever I got home. I then got home and learned that when I plugged everything back in, the cable was going to be sputtery and snowy for God knows how long before stabilizing, as it often is after a power outage.

It's still snowy, but the snow is almost gone.

Keith is pink and white again tonight, with, I think, the mild black-on-black stripe. Excellent look for him.

Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night on DU...

3. Yeah, it stinks.
Wretched. But all is well now.

:hi: Keith's looking lovely and pink, and all I regret is that I paused during commercials and didn't get a great one for Oddball.

Looks like Obama really killed in Georgia, and a bunch of states are about to close polls.

4. They were saying that it looks like a real generational split in
Georgia, with lots and lots of young people coming out and voting for Obama. Go kids!!!!

6. Yup
I was trying to explain this to a friend of mine who is a few years older than me. I feel that history is propelling us forward & that's why the youngsters are voting Obama. They're the 2nd & 3rd generations post-Civil Rights Act & they want to push on forward.

Me? I'm supposed to be a boomer but born during the last year of the "boom," so I'm with the kids on this one. The only America I remember is the post-Civil Rights one. :hi:

8. I'm 52, and I remember a lot about the Civil Rights era.
I especially remember visiting my dad's relatives in Arkansas, and seeing "White's Only" and "Colored's Only" signs on different businesses, and hearing the "N" word thrown around like it was nothing.

I was listening to Randi Rhodes today, and so many people who voted today called in (and they were voters for Obama and for Clinton), saying that they cried after they voted, because of how monumental this vote was. And they are absolutely right.

I'd like to think I have a sense of history, and of what women before me have done and sacrificed.
As well as a sense of what civil rights were like when I was born, as opposed to what they became only a few years later. And that I have not forgotten how recent this all is. And all that despite being only a tad older than you, Wolfie.

At the same time, like you, I feel that it's not only time for the Greatest Generation to retire, it's time for the old boomer wave--the adults born in the postwar 1940s and '50s who have dominated our country's public life for so long--to make some room for those a little younger than they are. We should not have to wait for them to die out.

It makes me sad and frustrated to see old-line feminists thinking that any younger feminist who doesn't support Hillary has somehow forgotten what a long hard struggle women have had. On the contrary...I dream of a brave new world in which I can support women based on THEIR record and THEIR experience and what I think THEY would do, versus based on their husband's record and their husband's experience and what HE did.

Edwards made my choice tough, but I have to admit, since he dropped out, it's looked clearer all the time.

19. Right on, Berry
I was born in the middle of the Baby Boom, so I was a bit too young to go out marching and such with the anti-war marchers, etc. I'm certainly not ready to retire to my rocking chair, but I am more than happy to welcome the younger generations.

One of my biggest passions is encouraging people to register and to vote. I started talking to my daughter about the importance of it when she was 15; she's 28 now, and I'm happy to say that she and her friends are politically aware, and that pretty much all of them vote.

I think there is room enough for all our voices, regardless of what generation we are part of. I don't like it when some younger folks I've read on DU say that anyone older than them should sit down and shut up, but I also don't like it when people my age or older think that the young people's voices and votes don't matter.

35. Everyone who is of age should have a voice.
And I'm getting mighty tired of the argument that Obama is nothing but flowery rhetoric and pretty speeches and that he attracts a cultlike following of zombies who are paying no attention to his substanceless platform or utter lack of experience.

For one thing, his platform doesn't lack substance. For another, he doesn't completely lack experience, and where he does, his lack matches up similarly to that of some guys who turned out to be pretty good presidents.

I also don't believe he will essentially bend over and take it from the Repugs, which is the other big argument against him.

Hillary has some things to be said for her, but at the end of the day I can't rid myself of the idea that if she becomes president, she's going to share the office with Bill, and, indeed, possibly be a figurehead while he steers the ship. I don't have enough Clinton nostalgia in me to like that thought, and I'm too feminist to want to see it happen. I feel it would be a mistake to be so miserable over the 2000s that we reach back for the 1990s. Just as it would be a mistake just to go for Obama because he's "new" and for no other reason.

46. I don't believe that stuff about Obama either.
I was very young, but I remember the Kennedy years, and how helpful he made a lot of people feel, and how much got done, either when he was in office, or within just a few years of his assassination (going to the moon, for example).

I've read Obama's website (and Clinton's too), and he has a lot of substance. People who put him down because of his message of hope are full of crap, I think.

I just watched V for Vendetta again the other day, and a line at the very end really struck me this time, when Evvy says, "This city doesn't need another building, this city needs hope." And so do we all.

99. I think a lot of people feel threatened by Obama's charisma, and I can't blame them.
Charisma isn't everything, and it's true that unless there's something to back it up, it means nothing. But I don't think that's the case with him. But the easiest thing to do when you want to attack someone is to attack their strengths. He's an excellent public speaker, so the easiest thing to do is attack his speeches and say that there's nothing beneath them.

I guess the easy way to attack Hillary is to say she's "unelectable" simply because no one else may be able to rally the Repugs against them as well as she can. Thing is, I'm not sure it isn't true.

even if it's a sports team, I find myself screaming "YEAH!" in my head.

Dan Patrick even plays it sometimes when playing clips of coaches on his show as they give press conferences. "We won big here, and now we're gonna go on to the playoffs and win there...YEAH!"

156. I sorted GDP by author
Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 10:32 PM by Patsy Stone
and flipped through the pages to see what the agendas were. I chose from there. It wasn't even based on a specific candidate, just the sheer stupidity of their oeuvre.

160. I'm sure they will not be missed.
Honestly, GD-P is such a mess lately, just looking at Latest Threads is a scary thing, and that's usually how I read DU.

161. Well, I think I will begin a new thread.
Anyone wants to continue, they can. I probably won't stay much longer because I need to go down and get my laundry and then I will probably flop in bed and record the rest. I'm curious to see what happens in California but I'm TIRED.
