KOEB 6/20/05 (from LA!!!!!!)...actually a case of Keithus Interruptus...
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 07:24 PM by BerryBush
Keith says...

"I missed YOU so much--yes, YOU--that I HAD TO COME BACK TONIGHT! And DON'T FORGET to watch me on Leno later tonight!"

"...ah, but sorry, I could only stay for 20 minutes...gotta do Leno...ASTB'ers, you guys take over, will ya?....I'm outta here." *scoot*

1. Hey, Berry!
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 07:02 PM by Patsy Stone
I'm so glad KO just dissed Goss and his statement that we have to observe the sovereignty of nations in the search for Bin Laden.

And Tom (I'm short!) Cruise has NO sense of humor!

Glad you're back, KO: :loveya::loveya:

I heard on another board that she was going to be subbing tonight. Guess they decided Alex was too boring and not snarky enough. I like her on the regular news, but not on Countdown.

134. Did I tell you my theory, Crispy?
On the memos coming out? I can't recall if I did, but it bears repeating.

While I was in London, the newspapers & media there were going on & on & on about 2 things that got very little play here due to the missing teen in Aruba story. The first story was Live 8 (in fact, my cousin & I were interviewed by the BBC about it while we were wandering around Trafalgar Square), & the second story was about Blair's trip the US & how he was counting on calling in a big favor (or should that be "favour") from Bush re: aid for Africa. Bush, of course, never feels he should repay his debts, so essentially gave Blair, who put his political career on the line by backing the war in Iraq, the finger. There were many reports & stories about Blair coming back empty-handed & having to scrounge for something in order to save face because of Bush's refusal to back him on the aid to Africa issue.

So, just in case anyone from Countdown is reading this (Hi KO, wear the gray suit for me, 'k?), for the above reason, I think the main leaker in the DSM scandal is Tony Blair himself, so you might want to start there when trying to discover where the leaks are coming from now. Blair's political career is over, finito, finis, his back remains itchy but unscratched, & all that remains now is to collect his title & seat in the House of Lords. What's left in it for him to support Bush's policies now?

Whoever, and I mean whoever, ultimately gets the nomination, we will all need to be united and stick together even if it's not our first choice. I'm still very undecided about the primary, but it's a long way away and a lot can change between now and then.

49. I was disappointed in Biden's remarks, as well.
I really liked that he was finally stepping up to the plate and speaking out, after that Gonzales nonsense. But I was very frosted at what he said about Dean. He's doing exactly what he was elected to do, speaking out and energizing the party! Too many other Dems have just been wimps for far too long! And it's not like Dean said anything that didn't need to be said or wasn't true.:grr:

And I completely agree with you that what we need to do now is stick together. If I know this, I can't understand why a veteran like Biden can't see it. That's been the problem for far too long, infighting and bickering and attacking each other. We know who the enemy is, and it ain't us!

But my choice for 2008 is whichever one can win!

But I've also had it with "the center." Clinton, while I still like and respect the man, is a centrist, and his cozying up to the Bushes makes my blood boil!

106. Thank you. You are exactly right!
While I genuinely liked and admired Kerry, I was continually frustrated with his refusal to differentiate himself enough from Bush*! You're exactly right! He wasn't clear! Like Al Franken is always hammering away about, Kerry didn't vote for the war! He voted to give the president the authority to use force so he could take it to the U.N., get the inspectors back in and avoid a war! So why didn't he just say so?! Yikes!

And when the repugs try to twist what the dems are saying, that we don't support the troops or are glad that they're being killed in such large numbers, we have to hit back and hard, with what we really are saying! A loud clear message!

Whew! Got that out of my system, LOL!:D

Fortunately, for her, she gave the right answer!:D

Except for the part about the Repugs being all white Christians.
Come on, you know that's not true. In the GOP you don't have to be white or Christian, or even rich...all you have to do is be anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-certain other things...

I'd LIKE to like Dean more. I just think he sticks his foot in his mouth sometimes. Sorry.

Then again, I have no particular loyalties to any party, except for what I believe in. (Gosh, I admitted it. Please don't throw me out, everyone.)

71. 85% of Republicans are white Christians...
sounds like "most" to me. :7

And, the more I learn about Dean the more I think that his so-called "gaffes" are deliberate. Notice how he got really quiet in the two months after he got the DNC chair position, and since then, has been periodically do this stuff to get himself to the news? He's one smart cookie, IMO. And I'm not really even a hard-core Deaniac -- I just agree with a LOT of what he's trying to do with the Democratic party. I think we need to reclaim our government from the corporatists and make it back into a government by the people, for the people, and I think Dean gets that, whereas not ALL Democrats do....

72. But, that's what Dean does so well...
He says out loud the things we're all thinking, and he takes the heat for it. That's part of the revised job-description for the Chair. Then the others can "distance themselves" if they wish.

Remember when he called BS on all the terror alerts? They sure stopped doing that as soon as he called them on it. I'm radical enough to say we NEED Howard Dean. Our prophet. Our Truth-Teller.

He would have had my vote, and probably a great many votes here. I do hope he decides to run again. Although, the WI dems said Russ Feingold kicked ass at the convention last week. He also hinted rather strongly that he IS thinking about running. :)

172. A collection of thoughts…
aimed at no one in particular...

I think Wolverine’s idea of Blair as “Deep Throat” of the DSMs is intriguing…

About the “we all have to stick together” stuff…well, I guess Democrats do. But for those of us who vote for people and not parties, well…we are going to have to make our decisions based on our personal consciences. And for once, it would be nice to be able to go to the polls and vote for someone without having to hold my nose because he is at least better than the alternative. Unfortunately that is how I all too often feel about the Dems…they’re better than the alternative.

To my mind, the problem the Dems have is not that they aren’t “left” enough. The problem is that they have let the Repugs co-opt not only the far right, but the MIDDLE. And the middle--one side of it or the other--is where most people live.

I believe the Dems will never be strong again until they can get more votes than they are currently getting in the center. If they hang their hats with people like Kucinich who are so far left they are falling off the edge of the earth, or someone like Dean who is easy for the Repugs to deride because he says things that make the whole party look prejudicial and bad like the unwise “Repugs are all white Christians” accusation, they will NOT regain the center. It’s that simple. It is easy not to like people like that. Yet it is easy for some to like people who smile in your face while robbing you blind, especially if they can scare someone easily with specters of gay marriage...which is why the Repugs get elected again and again. (That and election theft...but that's another story.)

They will also not get anywhere by being virulently anti-corporate (part of Kucinich’s problem as I see it). To get somewhere you must work WITH big business, not paint it as the root of all evil. It’s not. It’s the root of SOME evil. Not ALL.

Rhiannon, I think you are right about one thing: The Dems need to differentiate themselves. And they need to do a much better job of defending themselves when the Repugs twist what they say. But I do not think the way to do this is to go off the left deep end. The way to do it is to take back the image of being the compassionate party that cares about people. They need to say "We care about human beings and their freedom...and that is why we have the values we have and are for the things we are for."

How did they ever let the Repugs co-opt the image of being the party of liberty and freedom while they are at the same time busy hurting and bringing the hammer down on people right and left? THAT is what the Dems have to ask themselves. Because if they don’t find a way to address that…they will keep being victims of, at best, close elections that are stolen from them.

I’m kind of like Clark…I am so sick of the Reich-wing that they make me look like a wacky liberal. Just as they make Keith look like a wacky liberal to his detractors. But the truth is, I don’t go with the wacked-out left either…I would like a clear alternative that is a bit left of center, but is strong enough to actually WIN something and get somewhere and get something accomplished that will undo some of the bad done by all these years of living in Bushistan.

And I think it stinks that you can’t vote in a primary without declaring a party.

Off my soapbox now. *whew*

I've been emailing Robert Kennedy Jr's article about thimerasol and autism around to lots of people. It specifically mentions Frist's role in 'slipping in' the addendum to the Homeland Security bill indemnifying Eli Lilly for any responsibility if kids are hurt by the neurotoxin Thimerasol preservative in vaccines. My son was hurt by one of those very vaccines (he's OK now after years of help and intervention) and that is the main reason I despise Frist, as if there aren't lots of reasons of course.

Even my sister in law doesn't like him because of the catkiller stories. She's a Republican but a real animal lover.

Deadly Immunity
By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Salon.com

Thursday 16 June 2005

A Salon/Rolling Stone joint investigation.
When a study revealed that mercury in childhood vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids, the government rushed to conceal the data - and to prevent parents from suing drug companies for their role in the epidemic.

(Image: Salon.com)

In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Ga. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session - only private invitations to 52 attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly "embargoed." There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.

The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency's massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines - thimerosal - appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. "I was actually stunned by what I saw," Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants - in one case, within hours of birth - the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.

snip
But instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry's bottom line.

"We are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits," said Dr. Robert Brent, a pediatrician at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. "This will be a resource to our very busy plaintiff attorneys in this country." Dr. Bob Chen, head of vaccine safety for the CDC, expressed relief that "given the sensitivity of the information, we have been able to keep it out of the hands of, let's say, less responsible hands." Dr. John Clements, vaccines advisor at the World Health Organization, declared flatly that the study "should not have been done at all" and warned that the results "will be taken by others and will be used in ways beyond the control of this group. The research results have to be handled."

snip
The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government's vaccine-related documents - including the Simpsonwood transcripts - and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas. In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. Congress repealed the measure in 2003 - but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders. "The lawsuits are of such magnitude that they could put vaccine producers out of business and limit our capacity to deal with a biological attack by terrorists," says Andy Olsen, a legislative assistant to Frist.

215. The worst thing about the cat-killing of Frist is
that he didn't just adopt cats from the local shelter to kill and dissect them for his medical studies, but...he actually KEPT THEM AS PETS for a few days before he killed them.

In other words, he let them get to know and trust him first...animals who probably had little reason to know or trust anyone...who had finally come to conclude that this guy meant well, he was going to keep them and take care of them...and THEN he killed them.

THAT is sick.

religion and spirituality, art, animals, pretty much everything except politics. At one point my sister in law started ranting about Kerry in the car and I just asked her why she hated him so much. Turns out she got all her information from Faux News, no surprise she'd be frothing at the mouth about him if that was her source. I'd given her my copy of Outfoxed to watch but her husband, who is more of a wingnut than she is, refused to allow it to be shown in his house. He wasn't there this weekend, otherwise it would have been much more difficult to keep my cool. Would have had to thump him a few times and it might have gotten ugly.

Dusty Springfield would be insulted if she knew I had fallen in love with another cat (in a red state no less) but I am pining over the Dr. Schmoo the cat and Kim the dog.

111. Is he subbing for Leno?
That would be a dream come true.

I didn't catch it but apparently that reporter whose name escapes me who we like that is on Countdown all the time subbed for Tweetie and interviewed Barbara Boxer about Bolton and let her smackdown someone named Allen. Anybody see that?

I'll catch up with ya'll later, got to watch 6 ft.Under.

I forgot about your show in Nashville. Glad you and the sister-in-law got along on this trip. Nice photo!

I've now met a few other DUers. We went to 5thgendemocrat's Funday on Saturday. Most of the crowd was made up of his friends from Saginaw, but we met a few really great DUers -- Mrs. Grumpy and PassingFair and their hubbys and kids are great and we plan to get together with them. We also met Ohio Blues and her husband, Love Ohio Blues, who drove up fro Cincinnati, and Mich Otter and his wife. There wasn't a very good DU turnout.

217. My problem is with the lack of reporting...
Things are NOT going at all well, in Iraq, and the American people need to know. And, did you know, that they're already starting the same preparatory bombing runs in Iran? They abandoned Afghanistan, for Iraq, so there is no way that they could take on such a populous country as Iran, and one with a pro-American population! Left to their own devices, Iran might just achieve democracy on their own, as they had in the 1950's, before the Americans and British installed the Shah, one of the most repressive regimes in history. This is just nuts and I am very scared.

The "runaway bride" is another one. What all these stores are, are distractions, to take the public's collective attention away from the horrible and serious things that are really going on, like the continuing and escalating carnage in Iraq and the worst economy since Hoover!:grr:

As for my comment about the Michael Jackson trial, I heard that somewhere, maybe even on DU. And I thought that it was an excellent point. After the verdict came in, you just couldn't get away from the constant rehashing of it, on any channel, for the rest of the night. Though I admit I didn't check in with The Food Network or EWTN, LOL!:D

Normally I get myself in huge trouble for spouting off like this. I have no doubt that my mother is currently getting her "news," as she calls it, from Sean Hannity. And the other day, at my vet's, I was explaining the Joe Wilson case to the woman who works there who I know best, and know voted for Kerry, when this elderly Freeper came up behind me and started ranting that Bush Sr. should have taken Saddam out! And she was waving around her crutch! Yikes!

184. Actually, I was very proud of myself. I didn't lose it.
I just turned to this nut case and told her, very slowly and clearly, the reason that Bush Sr. didn't take out Saddam. I quoted Poppy, himself. In 1996, on the fifth anniversary of the "first" Gulf War, Bush Sr. said that the reason that he didn't take out Saddam, when he had the chance, was because doing so would have "turned the entire Arab world against us and destabilized the region." Then my vet worker friend grabbed me and shoved me into an examining room for safety! LOL!:D

And the other sad thing is, I'm sure that this Freeper didn't even hear me, she was so busy ranting. It's the same thing with my mother. When I asked her who was responsible for 9/11, fearing she'd say Saddam, she said the Palestinians! Yikes! That's what you get if all you do is watch Faux News.

stash it all. They will have a very public wedding, making all the news shows. Then, within a year or so, they will have a very public divorce. No one will feel sorry for either of them. Certainly not him because he already doesn't think very much of himself. Certainly not her because, unless Greyhound goes belly up, she knew the way out of town!

I really hated the Today show blurb about their "exclusive interview" with these twits. "The interview that everybody is talking about"? Who? No one I know was talking about it or them, for that matter.

I'm with you guys. STFU about it already - MSM. I wanna see the crew that was in that basement last week!

216. I was so disgusted with that damn NBC promo.
These people have both taken us for a ride. They figured out how to get rich in America--fabricate a little story that will make you the darlings of TV, even if it gets you in a bit of legal trouble while you do. The payday you will get from selling the rights to your story will more than pay all the legal fees.

Now they'll actually be able to AFFORD their huuuugee wedding, rather than taking years to pay off the bills. *yuk*

221. the Food Network was safe. They did not interrupt Iron Chef
to analyze and re-analyze the MJ trial. Gotta love Iron Chef, even if you can't recognize the ingredients some of the time. (I still think those bonito shavings are what hamsters nest in.)

I thought Keith got it a good but snarky point about being the designated driver among news anchors when it came to calling the verdict on the MJ trial and that maybe the verdict should be decided by people who'd seen more than 90 seconds and four or five sentences' worth of trial coverage per day. Didn't seem to go over well with Leno.

226. Thanks for the info, LOL! I wish that I'd thought of The Food Network,
Since I watch it all the time. And I do enjoy The Iron Chef. Do you have a favorite? Mine's Sakai. As for the ingredients, I once saw a take-off, probably on SNL, and the one that they used was "fish tumors," ROFL!

And I totally missed Keith on Leno! I was watching Al Franken on Sundance. But thanks for the reminder! But I know that my friend taped it and I'll have to get to her before she tapes yoga over it, like she did with Al Franken on Letterman! However, I sure see Keith's point, but aren't surprised at Leno's reaction. Wasn't he called to testify? The last time Keith was on, I was surprised at all Leno let him get away with, but trying to stop Keith, once he gets going, is like stepping in front of a runaway train! Now I have something to look forward to!:bounce:

227. Leno was called to testify, but it was about the generally grasping
nature of the accuser's family, I believe. Keith had a good blog the day after the verdict and I tend to agree with the point-of-view expressed therein: there's a difference between believing MJ is probably (or even definitely) a child molester and believing that it's been proven that he molested this particular child. I was surprised he wasn't convicted of the lesser alcohol charge, since that I think probably could have been proven, but the jury just got so pissed off at the prosecution that they decided to acquit him of everything.

Sakai is my favorite Iron Chef, although I love the "oh, shit!" expressions, Chen gets whenever they unveil the secret ingredient. I don't think I've ever seen him be happy about the choice of ingredient. :-)

Thanks. I don't know if you saw any of my other rants on this thread, but I said that I didn't care about Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe or "the runaway bride." There's real news out there that is going unreported, like the continued deaths in Iraq and John Conyers historic walk to The White House. *sigh*:-(

But I agree with you about MJ. He must have been guilty of something, or they wouldn't have brought charges. He's one very strange guy.:eyes:

And, yes, Chen is pretty cool, too, and is very expressive, LOL! Sakai remains my favorite, but I have seen all the others. It's a very amusing show, but I've never been tempted to print out any of their recipes! LOL! My favorites, on The Food Network, are Rachael Ray (who could object to "30-Minute Meals?") and Tyler Florence, who's good at everything.:-)

231. Don't quite agree with the statement that
"he must've been guilty of something or they wouldn't have brought charges..."

People are charged every day of doing things they're not guilty of, just because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. The American justice system still presumes innocence until guilt is proven. Doesn't mean we have to as individuals, but that's how the system works.

230. Same here, gk.
Is MJ a child molester? Probably.

Did he molest this child? Maybe, maybe not.

Was this child's mother out for a payday? Probably.

That would add up to acquittal under the American justice system, like it or not.

And yes, the jury should be the ones deciding.

Now, the jurors who went to his PARTY afterward...that's icky.

I just don't get the allure of celebrities. I've met a few, and just treated them like anyone else. And, in case you missed my rant of night-before-last, I don't care about Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise or Russell Crowe. I want to know how many of our brave troops have been killed in Iraq, today, for no damn good reason, and I want to hear from John Conyers, and see his historic walk to The White House. This is news. The rest, including the "runaway bride," the teen missing in Aruba and the poor little lost boy scout who was, fortunately, rescued, are just distractions from the real news that should be reported.:grr:

And for this, KO, I salute you.

Her name was Leslie. When I first moved in, she used to invite me over and "talk" about her charts and graphs on her walls, all her goal oriented scientology crap. She convinced me and my room mate to go to her "church" with her one night. They did the personality test and talked dianetics to us. I was weirded out. I promptly went back to the building and made friends with the guy that lived below her. We would get high and chant her name at the ceiling. She quit shortly after that.

And that's what I did in my first apartment in Boston!

I do remember seeing a screening of Neilson's "The Point" that they sponsored in college as well. Sure, I ate their cookies and watched their film. Then I went back to the dorm and threw out the literature. I still love that movie today!
