ASTB 6/23/05 (waaah again...)

"Hi. This is Keith. Look, I can see you guys are pretty depressed that I took yet ANOTHER night off. Well, let me just tell you--I have a VERY good excuse this time, despite what you may think. I have an extremely important meeting tonight with some guys in pinstriped suits. You know how that is.

*crack of bat* *cheers*

"Damn, when will these guys stop BLOWING MY COVER WITH THE SOUND EFFECTS????

"Anyway, I just want to say...please. Don't get any more torqued out about this than you already are, if you can possibly help it. Go take a tranquilizer or something. Read my new blog. RE-read my new blog. And by all means, EAT SOMETHING!!!!

"Now, for the really bad news...I might as well get it over with up front...I'm not going to be in tomorrow night either. (pause) What?!? You expect that after ALL I DID FOR YOU, coming in for 20 minutes from LA and then doing a WHOLE SHOW from out there just for you guys, I don't deserve a few more days off?? Whatta bunch of ingrates *I* have for fans!! Look, I'm sorry but I'm not even going to try to lie about it this time. YOU try to keep me away from a Mets vs. Yankees game. Just try...and see how far you get!

"And don't kid yourselves. I've got security guards posted on the subway line already to make sure I get there safely. So forget it. Just forget it.

"Ha ha! Batter up!! I can't wait!!!!"

1. Hey, Berry.
Great post and photo. Last night also.

Alison's covering some heavy stories tonight. McCaffrey was great and now David Gergen saying that KKKRove should revise his remarks.

that comes in.
They need to correct the Durbin calling troops nazi's though because he didn't.
Isn't it fun to watch the repukes melt down.

4. Are those all your pets?
They're adorable. I spent half the afternoon at the vet's with my dogs. *sigh* No emergencies, knock on wood, but it's always something with my guys. I adopt older animals, from rescue, so I should expect it by now. But I certainly don't regret it.

yes they are though two of the ferrets are no longer with us. Know the feeling on vets too well but good to hear there were no emergencies. No KOEB pets are allowed to get sick for a long long while.

it. Can't blame anyone though. 1.) I haven't been around much...it is summer and 2.) it is still light out because it is summer. No Keith so has to be hard to stop what ever and come in before dark.

18. WOW! And I think I have had it rough! I see that you have a cocker.
Four of the dogs in my life have been cockers. I still miss my beloved Barney, terribly, since he was the dog of my heart. I lost him 2 1/2 years ago, and he was at least 18, but you know how it is. He was 10 or 11 when I adopted him and I had him for eight years. When my vet was treating him with acupuncture, for calcification of his spine, I told him that, if I ever lost Barney, I'd have to climb up on the table so he could give me a shot! And the last time that I was there, I made sure that he understood that my little Brussels Griffon is immortal. Since I lost my other cocker, who he worshiped, last year, he's practically become a part of my anatomy. I have since found him another sister, and he looks to her for leadership, but it's not the same, for him.:-(

You deserve a lot of credit for caring for so many. The most I've had is two dogs and two cats, and they run me ragged, not to mention my vet bills!:-(

And thanks for the edict. I second this! I've never had a ferret, but my friend did, Merlin. He had to be very careful, since she'd crawl up in the sleeve of a shirt that he'd left on the bed and fall asleep. She was also leash-trained.:D

And I agree with the current story. I've been there, and I've done whatever I've had to do.;(

47. The Cocker, Holly
was sent to me from St. Louis because a friend's sons decided here was the only place she could live if they couldn't keep her. How do you say no to a 5 yr old and a 9 yr old. sigh And come to find out she was pregnant...though no one knew it until later. where Lacey came from.

75. They are both so adorable! I grew up with a cocker, so love them.
Both of my current dogs were supposed to be cockers, but I take whoever finds me, so I guess we're kindred spirits, in this. As for kids, I also understand.:-)

Here's my Barney, so you can see why I was reminded. He was on the local news, on a segment called "Pet Connection." The chief meteorologist, a real animal lover who's since become my friend, has this bi-weekly segment where he has pets looking for homes. My mother called me when she saw Barney, since he looked so much like the dog that I had as a kid. He was the stud dog at a commercial kennel (read "puppy mill") and when he became too old, they were just going to euthanize him. Fortunately, he was rescued by a great lady in rescue, who's also become my friend (and later placed a second cocker with me). He was 10 or 11, had never lived with people, and wasn't housebroken. And his story broke my heart, so I called before the show was even over, since I knew that this was the dog for me. There weren't a lot of calls, though he was such a beautiful dog, because of his age and the housebreaking issue. I adopted him the very next day and he was perfect from day one.

81. He was a beauty
and calling out to you too. Most of the animals here were rescued one way or another. Except ferrets and the hub would swear he rescued them. And the German Shepherd we bought because I missed my two and wanted a dog that would scare strangers even if he is a big baby.

154. Thank you. That's what I always say, they find me.
German shepherds are great dogs, but I couldn't lift one, if I had to. That's my prerequisite, since I always end up having to carry them.:-(

Here is my little guy with his beloved "sister," who we also lost. He belonged to an older lady, who died, and he was separated from his biological sister after nine years together. I sometimes feel like people, especially at the adoption clinics at PetsMart, where my vet is, think of me as having a fancy little dog, but he was nearly euthanized, twice, despite his pedigree. After I lost Barney, I thought that Sheena missed him, so I called about another blond male cocker, but he'd already been placed. But this really compassionate person, in rescue, who has also become my friend, told me that she knew of another little dog who was really in trouble. The guy who had him said he was only keeping him until Tuesday, and this was Wednesday. So, of course, he also found me. And he bonded immediately with my cocker. She was the sister who he'd lost.:-)

165. Except for the
sadness of them being turned out, the best way to get them is when they find and need you. On the shepherd, not sure I could lift him but would find a way. That is a good thing to think about when getting a dog though. Zaiden best be healthy and stay that way. Or least let Terry be home if he needs carried. I'm just finally convincing him he is not a lap dog.

183. Yes, the sadness is the toughest part.
My guys break my heart on a daily basis. But I just enjoy them so much, and their successes. And good luck with convincing Zaiden that he's not a lap dog, LOL! I have yet to do this with my Sara, though she's only 26 lbs, a pound up from her last visit. And Meneken, who I was really worried about, since he was only 6.6 lbs, last month, is up to 9.2 lbs. LOL! I never know, with my guys. I have more meds that I have to deal with, but my little dogs are doing well.:-)

3. Keith may not be there, and I'm sorry, too,
But Alison is my favorite of the subs and I thought the first two stories were good and Keith's style. I just wish that he was there, in person, to comment, though I'll have to take a look at his blog. My only objection was David Gergen getting away with comparing Rove's heinous remarks with Dick Durbin's. She shouldn't have let him get away with this after what was said, on yesterday's "Countdown," on the same subject. IMO, Durbin had no reason to apologize and that seemed to also be the opinion of "Countdown," with all the repug nazi comparisons that they showed footage of.:grr:

9. Rhiannon, you really need to read Keith's blog.
In which he says, in essence, "It doesn't matter who said it or who said it first...if that's all we care about, the terrorists won't have to get us because we'll tear each other apart for them..."

Of course, Keith doesn't want ANYONE to apologize. He just wants them all to resign, is all.

40. Well, I read it and, I'm sorry to say, I disagree on a couple of things...
I don't think that Robert Byrd should ever retire. We need his intelligent, brave voice. And, as I said before, I don't think that Dick Durbin should have apologized. As for Santorum and Rove, please get them out of my sight!:grr:

But I do agree that we're tearing ourselves apart and should just knock it off.:-(

13. New London's done this multiple times to some of the victims
Some of them had their homes taken away under similar circumstances already once, so they bought homes in a different area of the city after being shoved out.

The city is paying less than market value (according to my sister, who lives there, though not in the area that's being taken).

New London seems hell bent on getting rid of "undesirables" - see my other thread on that: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3929976

15. CC, you talking about the Supremes taking houses away?
It's interesting. Not long ago I saw a bunch of people evicted from their houses because highway construction was going through the land on which they stood. There was one house that remained standing long after all the rest had been bulldozed. I read about it in the paper. The owners were to be paid fair market value (or so the state said) for their home, but they said they couldn't find a new house for that amount of money. And they didn't have enough in savings or other assets to raise the money to buy another. So the state ended up letting them stay in the place for longer, hoping allowing them more time would help them in being able to find and buy another house.

I felt sorry for them. I would've hated to have my house yanked out from under me just because the state decided to run a highway through the land, even if there was nothing illegal about it.

The funny thing is, look at the conservative Supremes who dissented. Interesting.

In other words: Sure, Keith might show up on Countdown tomorrow night. But if he does, someone better get me some medical attention, because I suspect the sensation of all those live monkeys flying out of my butt will be pretty painful.

Oh, and if he's honest, any blogs he posts tomorrow night should be datelined "The Bronx."

Woman: We don't have a lord!
Arthur: (surprised) What??
Man: I *told* you! We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune! We're taking turns to act as a sort of executive-officer-for-the-week--
Arthur: (uninterested) Yes...
Man: But all the decisions *of* that officer 'ave to be ratified at a special bi-weekly meeting--
Arthur: (perturbed) Yes I see!
Man: By a simple majority, in the case of purely internal affairs--
Arthur: (mad) Be quiet!
Man: But by a two-thirds majority, in the case of more major--
Arthur: (very angry) BE QUIET! I *order* you to be quiet!
Woman: "Order", eh, 'oo does 'e think 'e is?
Arthur: I am your king!
Woman: Well I didn't vote for you!
Arthur: You don't vote for kings!
Woman: Well 'ow'd you become king then?
(holy music up)
Arthur: The Lady of the Lake-- her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king!
Man: (laughingly) Listen: Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government! Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some... farcical aquatic ceremony!
Arthur: (yelling) BE QUIET!
Man: You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!!
Arthur: (coming forward and grabbing the man) Shut *UP*!
Man: I mean, if I went 'round, saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bink had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
Arthur: (throwing the man around) Shut up, will you, SHUT UP!
Man: Aha! Now we see the violence inherent in the system!
Arthur: SHUT UP!
Man: (yelling to all the other workers) Come and see the violence inherent in the system! HELP, HELP, I'M BEING REPRESSED!
Arthur: (letting go and walking away) Bloody PEASANT!
Man: Oh, what a giveaway! Did'j'hear that, did'j'hear that, eh? That's what I'm all about! Did you see 'im repressing me? You saw it, didn't you?!

believe they are along with Blue and a few others. And each one has its own personality so of course they are missed when gone. I did pick up his ashes yesterday and left his extra chemo pill for Claudia, who really called to thank me. One of her ferrets had her leg amputated because of cancer and it spread anyway. So they use the Lomustine on her ferret. Also gave her the pain pills which are going to come in handy. She was at the vets last night and said the timing on the pills couldn't of been better. So in his way Gizmo is still giving.
I designed a box for his ashes...just waiting for it to get here. It is here http://www.cafepress.com/willowmooncc.24304516

Which one of your ferrets is the alpha ferret? (Roo was definately "top dog/fenine" around here, and the girls are trying to establish a pecking order - with little success so far. Mostly, it's a truce of "leave me alone.")

Mysti is beginning to think she is and might end up the main alpha because she screams loudest. The rest just try to avoid hissy fits and stay out of the way. Poor little Jinx is so laid back Lilbear and Snickers take turns dragging her under furniture trying to stash her away like a toy. But she just won't stay stashed. I eventually rescue her to the lap.

problematic. If you have more than one boy kitty and they don't agree on who the alpha is, you got trouble. Sometimes you can have multiple boys and they innately sense who the leader is and there's no friction. It varies.

don't ever talk about what they did, as if didn't matter. I never knew until we were going through my dad's belongings after his death that he'd earned a bronze star and a silver star. He almost never spoke of the war. One or two funny stories about boot camp and how he got his revenge and one or two not-so-funny stories about the poverty in Shanghai after the war, but the war itself he just clammed up about.

Hopefully, mostly good ones. If nothing else, it must have done him good to be with people who'd had similar experiences. I think a lot of the WWII vets feel their service has been forgotten or is poorly understood. It's must be difficult for younger Americans to imagine what was like back then when so many young men were away from home for years at a time and the whole country was galvanized into contributing toward the war effort in one way or another; utterly different from today's hemorrhagic mess.

My dad really should have been a Navy man, but neither he nor Uncle Sam knew an interesting bit of trivia until the first time he crossed the North Atlantic in a troop ship in mid-winter: Dad was one of those people who doesn't get seasick. Ever. It was his way of wreaking revenge on the guys who'd given him shit in basic training for being a hillbilly: sidle up to them while they were puking over the rail, stretch and say, "I think I'll go get some eggs for breakfast," or some other mention of food and watch them really double up.

ferrets home, and the cats too. hmm so not much he could say. I am in an old farmhouse. Its about 3000 sq. feet so plenty of room. Have just over an acre and a half though the ferrets do not go outside with out a leash and human and rarely. More of a chance of me saying no than him. Besides he doesn't clean the litter or wash their beds. Truthfully they would have to be really special guys, like a lap ferret would be nice. And they would have to get along with the others.

And the house was a major fixer upper so was cheap back in 86. It is still under construction...one of those types that if it should take an hour to do it will take 5 at the least.

The summer came and went, and Meghan wasn't ready to take them back to school with her, so they stayed - and stayed. Finally, one day she asked if I would like them to stay permenantly, and I said yes.

That was 9 years ago, and my life is definately better for it. :loveya:

94. Course Rev I have to warn you
that next cat may just show up on his own one day. We had just lost two, Noname & Rikki to old age when this little furball kitten showed up in my front yard. I swore I wasn't bringing him in...then it got cold and he went to the vets for a check up, shots etc so he could come in. That one is Butterball. One he disserved it because he survived in the front yard with out getting hit and well it got cold and couldn't let him freeze.
Good idea on letting Oreo and Binky bond first though.

about. She has seen me at the vets enough, she is the one they would not let come out front when I took Giz there the last time because they did not need us both bawling in the waiting room. She was crying in the back already. Dr. Keith had me crying with his I'm sorry I really thought he was doing better, I wish I could of done more. Great vet I found for them at least.

I agree - the one good thing that came from Roo's illness was finding the Green Bay Cat Clinic. From now on, the girls are travelling 30 miles to the vet (no matter how much they complain).

but she's just not Keith. It's funny, for a guy whom I suspect is essentially a very private man at the core (and that's what I meant the other night about him being zipped up tight), he projects a lot of appealing personality into his show without it seeming like a total ego-fest and he makes it work. Alison's coming along nicely in that regard but she has to work hard at something Keith seems to do naturally, and the seams show.

A.S. sits there and chirps to David Gergen that Karl Rove is a "talented" political strategist. :puke: :puke: :puke:

No, Ms. S., he's a vindictive, churlish loser who is channeling all his post-childhood resentment into ruining people's lives. Didn't anyone tell her about the racist rumor-mongering against John McCain in the South Carolina primary?

Are we to behold the wench next intoning that Richard Nixon was a great statesman?

And as for David Gergen, he gets the Captain Renault Award (i.e., "I'm shocked, shocked!") for fussily intoning about how the Republicans are attacking Democrats' patriotism. Hey, David, did you miss a little hate-fest called the Republican National Convention? Did you sleep through Newt Gingrich's reign of terror and Jesse Helms's not particularly veiled threats?

Poke Gergen with a fork. He is SO DONE.
