KOEB 6/24/05

"Hey there, Olby-cats and Olby-kittens. It's me, Keith, back again. Hope you didn't listen to any OUTRAGEOUS LIES that I wouldn't be here tonight, posted by some L7. Strictly squaresville, man!

"Where else would I be on a Friday night but with my favorite people...the crazy beatniks of the KOEB? Dig it, Daddy-O!

"I'll be bringing plenty of news and plenty of snark, and maybe even a marijuana reference for Patsy--so Patsy, smoke 'em if you got 'em!

"So join me. It'll be way groovy, man! Coooooool."

1. Hi Berry. I'm here early tonight too.
And I only have to run up and down one flight of stairs to post tonight so I'm psyched.

Got my snark plugs all charged up.

102. He's just trying to make up for being gone.
And I can't help but think that he was kind of chomping at the bit yesterday, wanting to take on Rove.

It's just that when Alison does the report, she makes it sound like an ice-cream break. Even her "interview" was pre-recorded. No disrespect intended, but Keith really needed to do that story yesterday. You know it, I know it, and HE knows it. :)

127. Speaking of meow...
...both of my meowers are in the DOGHOUSE tonight. (That's right, not the cathouse, we save that for Mary Carey.)

Let me tell you the tale briefly.

I was all settled in to watch Countdown on the couch like I always do. There's a little table on long legs that sits next to my couch and tonight I had a glass of soda on it (OK, pop, I have to remember I'm back in Ohio again).

Well, what happens but halfway through Keith's interview with the shrink about Tom Cruise, my cats both go SPASTIC and go on a tear through the living room...knocking the table over, sending the glass flying into the air and the pop splattering all over the carpet. And as if that wasn't bad enough, for some reason the remote on my couch that controls the channel magically flipped to another channel! I had to grab it and switch back to Countdown (fortunately all I missed was some of the shrink talking!)

Was I angry? Put it this way. The footage of that St. Louis fire didn't come close to what my head felt like.

Oh, they know I'm mad. They are hiding. Well they should.

Grrrrrr.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 08:03 PM by CBHagman
I understand that Tom Cruise publicly criticized Brooke Shields for the treatment she received during post-partum depression. It kind of makes me want to push a baby-sized doll through one of Mapother's orifices AND start fiddling with his hormones AND keep him up at night for weeks or months at a time and see how he likes it.

Wonder if she was helped by psychiatry and drugs. If so, maybe we can get the Morman to go after the Scientologist, celebrity boxing kind of thing. I don't think Brook cares how much Tom cares. Do you?

It can make women feel like killing their kids...or themselves.

But no, says Tom Cruise, it's all in your mind. Take some vitamins. Get some exercise.

144. I was wondering if someone would bring up Yates
The trouble is, what she did was so heinous and reprehensible that it is hard for people to get past it and realize that yes, she may have really had a psychotic disorder that caused her to do it.

Does not absolve. Not in the least. But it does, possibly, explain.

147. I know, it was hard to find her a sympathetic character in that tragedy.
Her husband didn't come off much better, she had experienced severe post-partum depression after an earlier pregnancy, and he just left her to 'homeschool' the kids even though she'd shown signs of coming unglued before. Just sad and scary any way you slice it. It really is post-partum psychosis in many cases and CANNOT,Tom Thumb, be treated with vitamins.

164. yes, for her, she'd slid from depression into psychosis
and what happened was utterly horrible. You think you guys got inundated with Andrea Yates, imagine what the coverage was like here in Houston. Yet she was clearly not a sociopath, so there must have been some serious mental illness going on. Sad, sad case no matter how you slice it. I really think our justice system needs a "guilty but insane" verdict -- that woman does not belong with the regular prison population.

As for Tom Cruise -- someone explain to me why I should give a rat's ass about his opinions in regards to psychiatry? He seems to be displaying boatloads of ignorance about the realities of mental illness -- i.e., there are people for whom medication and/or therapy have been beneficial and sometimes literally life-saving. I felt like he was reading off a cult tract.

171. Once again, gk hits the nail on the head
I'm all for "guilty but insane." It acknowledges that the crime is not being forgiven simply because the person is insane, yet allows that person to be treated like a person with a serious illness rather than a mere criminal who did it because he/she felt like it or had something to gain by doing it/had complete disregard for the feelings of other human beings. It says "OK, this person did it. Now we're going to remove this person from society and give him/her treatment and even if the treatment is not successful, at least this person will not be free to do this thing anymore."

And the answer to the Tom Cruise question is: No one can explain why ANYONE should give a rat's ass what he thinks of psychiatry. He's just using one problem in the psychiatric world--the problem of overmedication and overprescription--to attack and condemn the field as a whole. Why? Because he's been indoctrinated into $cientology and they want you dependent on them and they realize that you'll never become dependent on them if you actually believe psychiatry can help you with your problems. They hate competition for people's emotional loyalty and people's money, and psychiatry represents both. So they write a crapload of books and tracts about how bogus psychiatry supposedly is, full of bias and lies, then they get their recruits to read them and be totally indoctrinated in the content of the books so they can go out and preach the gospel of anti-psychiatry and pro-$cientology.

But what do you want to bet people WILL care what he thinks? And as a result, some of them will go untreated when talk therapy, drugs or a combination of the two could have helped them a great deal. And as a result, some of them will commit suicide, others will do other terrible things, and others will just be damn bloody miserable in life when they need not be.

I just hope all this backfires on him. I hope all this Katie-crap and anti-psychiatry crap backfires and his movie flops and the world shows it just doesn't give a crap anymore about Tom Cruise or what he says. You're nothing but another Hollywood actor, Tom. Your job is to act in movies. Stick to it or suffer the consequences when you don't.

178. I'm hoping it backfires, too. And the way he kept harping
on "the history of psychiatry" made me wonder if he believes therapy=Freudian analysis, which is so untrue. Man, Freud's theories tell you so much more about Freud's issues than the women he was "helping"!

196. That's for sure. Freud had his hangups, all right
even if he is the father of modern psychiatry.

Thank goodness it has moved beyond his theories.

Know what's scary? I recall being back in high school and being able to find books on the shelves of the library that espoused his views. And I don't mean complex tomes, either. I mean books aimed at younger people. Sure, they dated back to the early '60s, but whew, what they said about sex roles, the Oedipus/Electra complex...ggghhhh! And they were still on the shelves years later! All these books that said that it was natural for all little boys to want to marry Mommy and for all little girls to want to marry Daddy! And that the way to cure them of this was to teach girls to be little Suzy Homemakers and so on!

And yes, they did cover that magical moment when a little girl sees a little boy naked and discovers that she is "missing something"...and of course the only way for her to "get it" is to marry it! And in order for her to do that...well, bring on the miniature mops and brooms and start teaching her right now what is required!

AGGGGHHHHHHH!

172. Hmmm, you're reminding me of one of my favorite songs right now.
It's a Hall & Oates remake of a Teddy Pendergrass classic.

"Think I better let it go/'Cause it looks like another 'Love T.K.O.'..."

(I like to think of the "T" as standing for "To." I think you can guess what the "K.O." stands for in my mind.)

154. I'd say Marie could kick Tom's ass.

But it's the sheer arrogance of the comments that gets to me. Besides, the media make such a big deal over celebrities these days that I am afraid they do affect public opinion. Somebody (maybe it was Abigail Trafford?) pointed out that at least Brooke Shields's book on her experience would help remove some stigma attached to seeking help, plus educate the public about the problem.

173. I think Brooke and Marie both did people a service
and I'm not really big fans of theirs or anything.

It can't be easy and it's certainly not flattering as a celebrity to go up in front of people and say "I was so depressed after my kids were born that I felt like killing them." It's not something people will admit to with great ease. It goes against everything we're told new mothers SHOULD feel, not to mention bringing homicide into the equation.

But gosh darn it, if you as a celebrity will admit to it, and say you got help, maybe you can help a whole lot of other people out there who thought they were the only ones, and were deeply ashamed in addition to being depressed, because they would never admit their feelings to a soul for fear of being condemned.

179. I'm guessing it might help someone with that problem to hear
that anyone else had had it. The value of hearing that a celebrity has had it is that the information gets propagated far and wide. If they happen to like/admire that celebrity already, so much the better.

I lost a friend to Scientology. He was in the cult for many years and when he tried to get out they hounded him day and night, saying he owed money, stalking him and his family. He committed suicide, and while that says a lot about his state of mind that may have made him susceptible to something like Scientology in the first place, it also made me always think of them as a dangerous, and sinister organization, a cult definitely, a religion no.

I know two other twenty somethings that are in NYC literally hiding from their family in California, who are Scientologists trying to bring them back into the 'church.'

Remember the Scientology story about the woman who was trying to leave the 'Church' of Scientology and she ran naked into traffic in some city in Florida (where else), Tampa I think. The Scientologists grabbed her up, brought her back to this hotel, and kept her in isolation where she later died under mysterious circumstances. Charges were brought against them but I think they were not found guilty of anything.

WTF.

160. Rhiannon, I just saw that interview and you are absolutely right
Man, she was so good. Didn't miss a beat and even brought up the 28 missing pages from the 911 Commission report.

I would like to see Keith do an indepth show, not a Countdown but an hour special, with the families now. Not in September, but now. They have so much to contribute to the dialogue.

I also have to mention just how much of a tool Kay Hutchinson-Bailey (or what ever that nutjobs name is) she was. "Rove was speaking to a conservative group about liberals". So? I mean, Whoopi was speaking to a liberal group about conservatives. I don't see them cutting her any slack because the audience was not offended. That's just one example of the double standard that they call free speech. It's ok when they do it, but damn the torpedos if the liberals think they can get away with calling us on our hypocracy.

Once the transcripts are out, we need to post about both of these interviews in the other forums. We need to make sure that each and every one of these chickenhawk fuckfaces have to eat their words.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up about that interview. Without your post, I would have missed it completely. :hi:

163. Thanks, I agree. She was exactly what Keith was looking for.
And he could have gotten his points across much better with her outspoken and informed voice, speaking for him. She was just excellent, up to speed on everything and willing to speak out. I'm so glad that you caught her.

And, you're also right, that Keith would be excellent on this. He has a definite agenda, and a history with the WTC. He'd be perfect. Plus, he's willing to speak out and bring important truths to light. That's the reason that I watch him. He doesn't back off from the truth and is willing to tackle stories that the "liberal media" is too afraid to touch, like this one, the evils of FAUX News and Jeff Gannon.

I think it's Kay Bailey Hutchinson, LOL, but I know that she's a Bushie, so I left the room when she came on. I knew that I'd hate whatever she had to say. But I agree. They can get away with saying anything, while we liberals are painted as nut jobs. They can get away with any lie or obfuscation, while we're lambasted for telling the truth, as with Howard Dean. *sigh* I know.:-(

And, okay, I'm willing to post interviews, but I'm afraid that we're preaching to the choir on DU. The phrase that I post most is, "I agree with you." *sigh* I blame the media for being just too damn chickenhearted to bring the truth to the rest of America.:grr:

But I'm glad that you saw this. I was impressed with her, as well.:hi:

Notice how often KO calls him Mr. Bush, and doesn't refer to His Fraudulency by his royal title.

103. How many people have already called it a quagmire
and he just laughs?

Sheesh.

Yes, Bun, I noticed that KO often calls him "Mr. Bush." And yet the other night on Leno when he was talking about Clinton he said "Like him or not, he's the President of the United States" and that when he asked him for his autograph, he said "Mr. President..."

Nuff said...

177. You know what's interesting?
Does anyone remember how the far righties used to behave during the Clinton presidency, and the propaganda they used to try to spread about people who allegedly didn't recognize him as "their" president? I'm thinking right now of an urban legend about people in some branch of the military who supposedly showed secret defiance of him when they had a face-to-face encounter with him because they did not accept him in his role as commander in chief of the armed forces because they did not respect him.

Man, I have to look this up on snopes, I know it's there:

http://www.snopes.com/military/salute.htm

It was supposedly the Marines. And the story is, as you can see from reading this, false.

Yet they spread these stories around anyway. And that was all right for them, but now that the blivet is President, everyone must show him proper deference and respect, right? Please.

All I can say is, thank goodness Keith isn't a Marine!

the perfect "Keith Trap" would be very simple...just a large wooden box propped on a forked stick attached to a string leading off into the bushes where the trapper lies in wait...and, underneath the box, a baseball card.

ANY baseball card, really. After all, it could be traded with someone for one he doesn't have. That's the real value.

Take a few minutes to go there on your own, ladies; I'm sure Berry will wander through in the next day to give us the guided tour. 184. Suuuuuure....
;-) I'll have to look through what photos we have that are digital. We're not one of those "it didn't happen unless you took a picture of it" families and I have a sinking feeling there may not be any pictures of me that don't have the munchkin in 'em and my husband would go ballistic if I posted one of those. He wasn't too thrilled about the "shoot your mug with our mug" idea, but that's because I had some bad net encounters in the past -- I've been on the net a looong time and having an obviously feminine userid back in the 80's attracted a lot of creeps. If we don't have anything suitable in the stash that's recent, I'll either have to take a new picture and wait to get the film developed, or go back a couple of years to when the munchkin's so tiny she doesn't look anything like what she does now; I haven't changed that much in a few years' time.

81. Yeah, his dog is fine at least.
It's over at my mom's house. But his parrot died. :(

71. Crispini, that's horrible
I hope no one was hurt. Things can be replaced, but people can't.

Anything we can do to help?

83. No, the worst is, of course, the stuff that can't be replaced.
Thankfully we were able to save a lot of his pictures.

Unfortunately the fire was started by his alcoholic roommate who left a candle burning. We told him he should throw this guy out but he didn't want to... :(

Time to kick that guy to the curb...way past time.

111. How sad, crispi.
I knew we were getting to the part of the thread about those poor boys...and what a sad piece of news to add to it. *sigh*

My heart aches for anyone in that situation.

70. Flipper-er-er

but now on to the three boys in NJ.... we had an incident here in town with a "missing" 6 year old girl who turned out to have been beaten to death by her "loving family" so it's a doubly sad day for me.

156. If there is an upside to such stories
it's this: the family called in a missing child report to the police at about the same time that someone else found her body. The cops busted the mom, step-dad, and his parents almost immediately & CPS took the other 3 kids. Here's hoping all these adults serve hard time.

117. Don't you love those city shout-outs from MSNBC?
I also love how sometimes they do a really special one...like after the royal wedding news one night they showed Buckingham Palace. Pretty funny.
