154. I think the profiler was incensed because BTK was |
|
power-tripping on the allocution. I think he was right in saying that it shouldn't have been broadcast on national television and he's probably right that the guy should have been in a prison jumpsuit with handcuffs; I'm not sure about the leg irons. Not only did BTK get juiced off of this, this sort of thing feeds the fantasy for other serial-killer wannabes. Even for the lust killers, it's largely about power, and lecturing the judge, being on national TV, being "famous" for 15 minutes -- that's some pretty heady power for someone who probably feels they have little or no status otherwise in their life.

153. actually, he *didn't* look like a nice guy to me... |
|
there's something in the facial expression, even in the older pictures, that hints that this is not a nice person. Maybe not a serial killer, but definitely someone who is resentful and not merciful, who likes to be in a position of power over other people and abuse that power. The scary thing is, I meet people with some of those attributes in real life far too often. How many of them have secrets this awful?

161. That's what makes you wonder. |
|
But really, aside from some nuance in his face, which can be hard to read correctly, he's the very definition of the banality of evil. Which is precisely what makes him so terrifying.
He's not Jason or Freddy or some horror-movie monster. He's just an ordinary-looking guy who happens to be capable of the worst things. Any one of us might let him in our door without asking for his ID, thinking, he looks harmless enough, and I don't want to insult him by asking him. That's why these guys are so successful. They seem sorta polite, sorta helpful, sorta mild and harmless. Then, you hear him turn the lock in your door, and when he turns his face back to you, you realize your goose is cooked.
Sometimes I think we could avoid these guys if we would all spend more time being a little suspicious and less time telling ourselves it's rude to be mistrustful of the guy at the door, or the guy who offers to help us carry something, etc.

148. Ramzey likes him, but he's having some adjustment problems. |
|
Ramzey thinks Gav is going to take me away from him, actually, and even told us so.
If anyone has any pointers in how to make this transition a bit smoother, feel free to chime in.
The good thing (I guess) is that Gav's been through it personally and knows the score. He said he kind of resented his now step-Dad when he and his mothers started dating. But, like Ramzey, his real Dad was a jerk, so he eventually grew to love and respect his step-father. Gav even told Ramzey (and me) that he wasn't going anywhere and that we'd all just have to get used to it - Ramzey included.
Ramzey's just used to being "the man of the house," you know. Although, he plays with Gav and stuff - it's just every now and then, Ram will feel like he's "losing me." :(

If he's ever liked, "I'll Love You Forever" as a bedtime story, it might not hurt to drag that one out and read it again, although it gets me every time.

124. Precisely. "Crazy" gets better with therapy, but |

you can't give a person born without a conscience a conscience. It's never going to develop. There IS no therapy for that.
Actually, Andrea Yates is a good contrast. As horrible as what she did is, she could be changed with therapy and medication. It might never have happened had she had some. This guy would've done what he did for as long as he could, for as long as he remained free...no matter what. There is no fixing him. You take him out of the population for good. That is all you can do.

Sheesh. John List was a Lutheran too. Remember the guy who killed his mother, wife and three kids--ostensibly because he couldn't make enough money to support them and was afraid the oldest daughter was going to Hell because she had taken up acting?--then went on the lam for 18 years? Thank goodness they finally found him.
Talk about zipped up tight. I think his mother warped him. Never used to let him close the door to his own room as a kid. Ouch.

(amd we're talking my German heritage here), many of the Lutherans have "control freak" listed as their occupation on their IRS returns. After one particularly contentious council meeting (I was the music director at the time), I told my mom "I think I've finally figured it out. These guys help me to understand how and why Hitler came to power.
That's the irony of which I spoke.

I'm reading a really good novel right now that explores the whole issue of why the ordinary Germans behaved the way they did while Hitler was in power. The whole issue of why more people didn't help the Jews, why some people actually helped the SS find them, why some people had such an easy time falling into the belief that, hey, it wasn't so bad not having those Jews around anymore.
I'd like to think there's more to it than just the German psyche, although that may play a role. I'd also like to think there's more to it than the so-called "Lutheran" psyche. If there is one.

166. Well, they were a beaten and defeated people after WWI. |
|
Their nation, economy, families, etc., were all in shambles. Hitler came to power, offering strength and a promise of a return to greatness. Uber-patriotism, if you will. And when you're broken down and defeated, that message is very, very attractive.
Many of the German settlers in WI were those fleeing the wars in the 19th century. Some of them were released prisoners, hoping to start over in a new place. But like most dysfunctions, they brought their problems with them.
The city I served in had an extremely high rate of alcoholism, of under-achievers, and was essentially a "blue collar" city. In the church, they found one area where THEY had a say in what was going on, and they used every bit of power they could.

163. Your instinct will protect you better, I think. |
|
If someone gives you the creeps, even for a less than completely obvious reason, stay clear. Don't let him invade your space or get you anywhere where you can't get away. Don't accept offers of "help" that you find suspicious or too freely offered. Be as self-sufficient as you can.
I think it gives you better protection than a gun, which could well be turned on you.

my mom always says, "when in doubt, don't". My variation on that is, "Given sufficient time, your brain will catch up to your instincts and tell you what's making you uneasy about a situation. BE SOMEWHERE ELSE while you're figuring that out."

Is it because nobody wants to see the 70's version atop the Twin Towers?
I suspect it will be as thrilling as the remake of "Planet of the Apes" was.

I bought it at an outdoor art festival. They even had a Gatling Gun which fired 144 rubber bands. It's made of wood and fires about 10 rubber bands, but you have to reload frequently. I checked on the web just now, but I don't see the company listed. But it's from Texas!

121. I think his final little speech before pitching the wad |
|
was Keith's little way of saying (without making it too obvious), "OK, so thanks to stinking corporate synergy, I have been FORCED to relinquish the last minute of my show to a damn movie trailer for a damn movie that my employers insist on using my time to promote on their network. But the LEAST I did was have some fun with it by creating a Greatest Monkeys list."
Sheesh. What next? Will they just cancel Countdown and force Keith to host a show featuring trailers for all the new Universal movies? Bleagh.
'Bye, Keith. We'll miss you tomorrow night. See you Wednesday...at least I hope so!!

The ol' suspension of disbelief just went right out the window there.
Why don't they show us the trailer for Terry Gilliam's new flick? Now THAT would rawk.

131. No, we need a Countdown promo! |

With Keith wearing the Willy Wonka costume, singing his own theme song while the faithful fans (that would be us) gather 'round him singing backup.
Who can take a news flash, Sprinkle it with snark, Make us laugh so hard that we forget about the dark? The Snarky-Man can!
Who can wear a nice suit, That will make us sigh, And make us all go crazy when he wears the DU tie? The Snarky-Man can!
The Snarky-Man can, The Snarky-Man can 'cause he mixes it with snark and makes the world seem good!

Yeah, I should do laundry, eat, that kind of stuff.
I'll probably have to post another KOEB Puppet Theatre before tomorrow night, though. People will need something to get them through the agony of having Gorgeous Snark preeempted for Icky Stupidity.
