If I could say one thing to that Olbermann guy tonight.
It would actually be two things.

First, that was a fine tribute to Peter Jennings. I hope I never die, but if I do, I hope there is someone to step up and say something about me that unites everyone present in fond remembrance of my place in their lives, and makes them feel the common virtues of being a part of an intelligent and concerned community the way you did for Peter Jennings tonight. I know a lot of people who were touched by his passing, and you spoke to them in a way that gave credit to your time at the podium.

Second, and following naturally from this, is the reflection that there are many who would want you to know that you are held in similar esteem because of the quality of the attention you bring to your work, and the kind of conversation that results.

Good program tonight.

2. Because I hoped someone here would credit it to "Joe Bleever"
and forward it.

Also, I wouldn't want to butt into his Jennings tribute with something that turned the focus back on him, because I don't think he'd want it at this moment.

But he did good, don't you think, Cheese?

3. I don't think he would have a problem with that, actually.
Because Keith brought this all back home by sharing his personal experience, but he didn't say it was "about me"--he said it was "about you."

By telling a story about himself, he made it a story about us.

I see nothing wrong with pointing out how beautifully he did that, Bleev. And that's precisely what you did.

5. Bleever, fire off that email, and here's why:
The one thing I remember when my friend's husband died was how much the support of their friends meant to them. After the funeral, my girlfriend's mom was off by herself. I made it a point to find her. I told her, "this must be doubly painful for you. Not only did you lose a son in law you loved, but you're watching your daughter go through hell, and you can't do one darn thing about it." She told me later these simple words meant so much to her, and we've been friends in our own right ever since.

I know when I had surgery done, some of my friends were afraid to contact me, for fear they'd be a "bother." BULL. That's when you need them the most. So fire off that emain, and just say what's in your heart. Even if it doesn't get read, you've sent out some good, loving energy. That's enough to be proud of right there!
